Thoughts on these girls names

Currently trying to decide on names and no girls names are really floating my boat, there are a few I like, but there always seems to be a reason to avoid. DH doesn’t seem to have much of an opinion, but keeps suggesting we go with Rosie because our 3 year old wants to call the baby this (male or female). I am not convinced allowing a 3 years old carte blanche to name our baby is the right move, so thought I’d ask strangers on the internet to instead. So, opinions on my list or suggestions welcome!

Anais - English people will mispronounce
Ophelia - too much
Leonie - DH thinks chavvy, I think he’s wrong
Poppy - like don’t love
Flora - really like it, but the spread
Florence - could be shortened to Flora
Posy
Lavinia - too much
Dolly - too kitsch?
Astrid - too Nordic?
Viola
Marielle - I know it’s not but sounds a bit made up?
Agnes
Agatha - too granny
Petra
Delphine - too much
Hattie
Iris - too like isis?

Anais - English people will mispronounce.
They will and it's annoying having to correct people, and they don't like being corrected. Not keen anyway.

Ophelia - too much.
Too much.

Leonie - DH thinks chavvy, I think he’s wrong
It has two ways of saying it Lee-un-y or Lee-OH-nee. A no from me.

Poppy - like don’t love
Me too

Flora - really like it, but the spread
Love

Florence - could be shortened to Flora
why bother. Do you like Flo?

Posy

Lavinia - too much

Dolly - too kitsch?
Fine

Astrid - too Nordic?

Viola

Marielle - I know it’s not but sounds a bit made up?

Agatha - too granny

Thanks everyone for your comments, always interesting to see what people think. I feel like if nothing else Astrid is ruined forever!!!

I have an Iris and a Viola, I didn’t think of ISIS really and no one has ever said anything. I would have called my third child Agatha had he been a girl!
I really like Astrid too.

bridgetreilly · 07/07/2020 20:23

I really love Agnes and Agatha. You could even have Agatha nn Hattie, I think. Also consider Annis.

Also love Petra. And Harriet nn Hattie. I wouldn't give Hattie as her full name.

CaffiSaliMali · 09/07/2020 08:32

There are lots of lovely Rose names you could 'shorten' to Rosie.

Rose
Rosa
Rosalie
Rosanna
Rosalind
Rosamund
Rosemary
Rosemarie

I don't think Leonie is chavvy - there were a couple at Uni and they were all quite posh.

Anais is gorgeous, but will be mispronounced. I think Florence is more likely to become Flo than Flora. I like Iris, I don't think people will think of ISIS.

I like Viola too (Vye-luh, rather than Vee-oh-luh - the instrument is the latter and the name the former according to my year 9 English teacher when we studied Twelfth Night).

MikeUniformMike · 09/07/2020 23:25

I did Twelfth Night at school too!
Mar-eye-ah not Mar-ee-a.

I think Viola tends towards Viler depending on accent.
I know a Wiola, hence my question (- the ?) about how you'd say it.

Alongcameacat · 10/07/2020 03:16

Anais - it will be mispronounced.
Ophelia - too much - Yes too much.

Leonie - DH thinks chavvy, I think he’s wrong.- He is right.
Poppy - like don’t love. I think its ok as a nickname. I would not name a child this.
Flora - really like it, but the spread. - I don't like it.
Florence - could be shortened to Flora. Not a nice name at all. I can never understand why so many seemingly like it. I guess it will in time be a Lauren type date and easy to date its popularity.
Posy - No - Its terrible.
Lavinia - too much - yes.
Dolly - too kitsch? - yes. Margaret is better and Maggie is better still.
Astrid - too Nordic? - A lovely name.
Viola - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?
Marielle - I know it’s not but sounds a bit made up? - No.
Agnes - No.
Agatha - too granny - you are right.
Petra - I really like this name.
Delphine - too much. I like this name too.
Hattie. My favourite. I love it.
Iris - too like isis? - I would never have made the association.

IdblowJonSnow · 10/07/2020 03:51

What about verity?
I like Agnes and Iris best from your list.

zingally · 10/07/2020 12:15

You've got a bit of a Nordic/Germanic vibe going on... Have you considered Freya? Viking goddess of... war?

From your list, I like Ophelia and Leonie. Leonie WAS a little bit chavvy 20 years ago, but I feel like it's moved away from that now.

Pemba · 11/07/2020 20:10

How on earth is Leonie chavvy? That's moronic.

I would say Leonie and Viola are my favourites of your names. They're both fairly unusual too. Viola is so much nicer than Violet (fusty, Victorian) - Viola is Shakespearian, also a lovely flower as well as a musical instrument. You will need to get the pronunciation pinned down though! I believe the Shakespeare character is VY-oh-la, so like Violet, just with a different ending.

I dislike both Agnes and Agatha, as I find the 'ag' sound really harsh.

Agar58 · 11/07/2020 20:36

Anais - English people will mispronounce
Ophelia - agree
Leonie - DH thinks chavvy, I think he’s wrong - love this name
Poppy - like don’t love - ditto
Flora - really like it, but the spread - not so much
Florence - could be shortened to Flora - reminds me of Italy, not a bad thing
Posy - not my fave
Lavinia - too much, agree
Dolly - too kitsch? LOVE
Astrid - too Nordic? also love
Viola - pretty
Marielle - I know it’s not but sounds a bit made up? Marinelle nice too
Agnes Reminds me of a name from handmaids tale
Agatha - too granny - shortened to Agy?
Petra sweet
Delphine - too much - my eyes just want to say dolphin
Hattie - fave
Iris - too like isis? Nice

NannyR · 11/07/2020 20:42

I like Astrid best. Not keen on Lavinia (purely because she was a mean character in one of my favourite childhood books!!) but I love Livvy as a shortening for it. Along the same lines, I also love Laetitia, with Lettie as a shortening.
