My DH and I are struggling to come up with girls names. My DH does not want a name that is too poplar we had settled on Martha, but we recently know if a couple of newborn Martha's. DH has suggested Piper, what do people think?

Piper is nicer than Martha. Martha is very scullery maid.

I have a family member who called her daughter Piper last year. It's a lovely name. Its also the kind of name that grows on you. So i say go for it. Its a lovely name.

CountessFrog · 28/06/2020 01:59

I think it’s very American, doesn’t sound like a real name.

Makes me think of pipes and pipe cleaners. Martha much more lovely.

Tavannach · 28/06/2020 02:04

Piper.
No contest.

prolefeed · 28/06/2020 02:17

I know three Pipers. I prefer Martha.

Pieceofpurplesky · 28/06/2020 02:19

I love the name. I know a teenage Piper and it suits her.

DramaAlpaca · 28/06/2020 02:36

It's horrible. Almost as bad as Martha.

I know of a few Piper’s born recently so it’s getting more popular. As with others, first thing I think of is a man or woman playing the pipes.

Sunshineboo · 28/06/2020 04:03

Charmed fan here - I love it. Love pheobe too

Hailtomyteeth · 28/06/2020 04:30

The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.

Some really cool people are pipers.

'Piper sell your pipes, buy your wife a gown'.

No. Wouldn't use it as a name. For me, it would be like calling someone 'Plumber' or 'Mechanic'.

longtimecomin · 28/06/2020 04:46

I love Piper, sounds like a clean positive name. I get beachy vibes, maybe because of the sandpiper.

joystir59 · 28/06/2020 07:05

Piper is dead popular.

joystir59 · 28/06/2020 07:06

I prefer the much sweeter Pipette or the plainer Pipe.

tenbob · 28/06/2020 07:09

My dog is called Piper Blush

FrugiFan · 28/06/2020 07:14

How about Pippa? It's a bit of an halfway house between Piper and Martha - less trendy/modern than Piper and less frumpy than Martha.

ODFOx · 28/06/2020 07:19

No opinion either way on Piper. The Bly ones I've heard of are American so I can't contextualise it.
If you like Martha but feel it's too popular have you considered Mabel?

abigailwendover · 28/06/2020 07:27

I like the sound of the name Piper but it does remind me of OITNB. Mind you, the series has finished now so wouldn't have thought her peers would make the connection.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 28/06/2020 09:33

Really don't like Piper. I have Scottish family so I either picture bagpipes or Piper Alpha. Neither of these associations are great....

SerenityNowwwww · 28/06/2020 09:39

I think Piper Alpha (I’m Scottish - Don’t know if people remember it was an oil rig that exploded in the north sea in the late 80 and killed a lot of workers).

SerenityNowwwww · 28/06/2020 09:39

(Missed your post Batley)

Whoopsmahoot · 28/06/2020 09:41

Martha reminds me of handmaids tale and Piper, Orange is the new black. Guess I watch too much Netflix

Magicismagic · 28/06/2020 09:48

I’m Scottish and a friend of mine has a niece called Piper and every time my friend mentions her niece I mentally add Alpha on to it, not intentionally and I would never say anything to my friend. I did know someone who died on the rig though so the connection is very real to me.

CaffiSaliMali · 28/06/2020 10:10

Piper makes me think of the Pied Piper of Hamelin and of children disappearing.

I prefer Martha of the two. Martha and Piper are very different in style. I would expect someone who liked the name Martha to like other biblical names like Abigail, Ruth, Rachel, Naomi, Esther, Rebecca, Sarah and Leah. Or a name like Matilda, or Tabitha.

Piper feels quite modern and I would expect someone who liked Piper to like modern names like Harper, Maddison or Preston.

I know a Pyper and think it's a beautiful name Grin
