Is Ariella strange for a non-Jewish child?

Really hung up on this beautiful Hebrew name, I have a strong affinity for very feminine names as you can see from my previous threads! However, we are not Jewish, so would this be a weird name for a child who is not Jewish? I have read somewhere that Ariel was the old name for Jerusalem, which doesn't bother me at all but would it seem strange to others?

No, I didn't know it was a Hebrew name. In any case, huge numbers of girls have Hebrew names - Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Leah, Elizabeth...

Tootletum · 12/06/2020 11:53

Girl at school called Arielle is definitely not Jewish if that helps.

watercolourart12 · 12/06/2020 12:13

Thank you @ILoveStickers and @tootletum! That does help! :)

It wouldn't occur to me that it was Jewish. Beautiful name!

Candycats · 12/06/2020 12:28

Arielle was one of our top names when I was pregnant if we had a girl (we had a boy!), I didn't know it was a Hebrew name. It's a beautiful name 😊

watercolourart12 · 12/06/2020 12:28

@spiderlight thank you! I love the name, It doesn't seem to be liked much on mumsnet though!

I think it's very pretty. Although if I give it the secretary v. manager test, it sort of sounds more flowery rather than serious iyswim, but that might not be a consideration.

GeriGeranium · 12/06/2020 13:03

I didn’t know it was Hebrew. Loads of popular names are originally Hebrew (Sarah, Rebekah, Hannah etc) so I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s pretty.

SleepingStandingUp · 12/06/2020 13:05

No, dt2 would have been Ariella if he'd been a she

Onceuponatimethen · 12/06/2020 13:07

We do have Jewish family (grandfathers on both sides) and I say why not?!

Personally prefer Arielle to Ariella but both lovely names

Cbeebiesrehab · 12/06/2020 13:15

I actually know three oddly enough! It’s never grown on me though. None are Jewish though if that helps. Two are Italian.

7ofNine · 12/06/2020 13:19

I didn't know it was a Hebrew name not that that would particularly bother me.
Ariela is the butterfly from Tree Fu Tom!

Thank you so much everyone for the positive responses! Hebrew names are beautiful and this one caught my eye a few weeks ago, I've had my heart set on it since. I do agree that it is very much on the flowery side but I'm sure Ariella can be an artist, scientist or a mathematician, her qualifications & character will be more important in making a positive impact on the world than just the name alone. It is a beautiful name so I don't see why it would be an obstacle in her life to have a flowery pretty name. That's just my logic & opinion! :)

I didn't know it was Hebrew. It's a lovey name!

kenandbarbie · 12/06/2020 13:47

I don't think it's a flowery name that would preclude serious careers. Arabella is similar sounding and no probs there with being a judge or a doctor!

whatausername · 12/06/2020 13:58

I don't think anyone where I live would realise it's Jewish. Would more probably think the mum was quite into Disney/princess-y things and wanted her little girl to be a 'princess'.

MrsSnitchnose · 12/06/2020 14:00

I know one and she's of Hispanic origin. I'm another one that didn't know it had a Jewish connection

spiderlight · 12/06/2020 15:31

If she thinks it's too flowery when she's older, she can always go by Ella.

olympicsrock · 12/06/2020 15:52

Beautiful name - didn’t know it was Jewish. Intelligent, elegant name . Go for it

watercolourart12 · 12/06/2020 16:31

Thank you so much! So happy to hear all the positive responses :)

I wouldn’t have had any idea it was a Jewish name!

MsTSwift · 13/06/2020 07:20

It’s fine abit fussy for my taste but can’t see using it would cause any issues

sweetkitty · 13/06/2020 07:21

No not at all four of my DC have Jewish names just because we liked the names and they happened to be Hebrew in origin. It’s a lovely name if you love it use it.

mamaof2girls · 13/06/2020 07:22

This is my little girls name and I love it never heard anyone with this name around me and I still don't. When I picked it no one liked it eaither but she suits it so much and I still love and any time I tell someone her name they are always like wow that's beautiful same with her little sisters name! X

Pinkblueberry · 13/06/2020 07:33

I didn’t know it was a Jewish name. In other languages Arielle and Ariella is the name for ‘Ariel’ the mermaid so it sounds very Disney to me - I would never have thought Jewish. Nice name though.
