Help! We have totally different name tastes and no boy names!

We've sort of managed to pick a girls name but we have nothing, not even one short listed name, for a boy, constantly vetoing each other.

I like names like Austin, Everett or Elliot - DH is not on board. He likes names like Clancy or Trent, definitely not for me.

The only name I'm sort of warming up to at the moment is Stellan (I'm Scandi so it wouldn't be totally out there).
But we're not the type for what's typically considered traditional names like Alexander, Benjamin or Oliver. Nothing wrong with them, they're all lovely, they're just not us.

Would you have any inspiration of names I could suggest to him? Im running out of ideas and I'm sure there are loads of amazing names out there I haven't even considered or stumbled across yet.

I think the only thing to do is both write a list of your top 10/20 names and then swap over.
You then star the top 3 you like from each others.
Then you have a narrow list and go from there. If one of you refuses to mark 3 names you like best from the others list, none of their names get chosen, if that makes sense.

december2020 · 06/06/2020 09:44

Good suggestion and I have suggested this to DH as well! I just need a few more new names on my list I guess, as at the moment I think he'd star max one at best. 😅

I am currently building my list of 20 (think we may need the extra names to manage to star up to 3).

I would have said the names you listed and your DH listed are exactly the same type. What do you think the difference is?

helpmum2003 · 06/06/2020 09:48

I think all those names are similar also..

stophuggingme · 06/06/2020 09:50

Those names are very similar

ReginaGeorgee · 06/06/2020 09:50

This is very much like DH and I. He tends to like completely different style names to me. We try to go through lists but he finds it hard to imagine a name on someone just from a list which I understand... it's a really tough one but the suggestion of making some lists and star rating them is good.

Also, I've noticed if I say to DH "What do you think of ....?" He usually vetoes it because it's my suggestion. If I do it together with him and find the same name, for example, he tends to consider it more and often say he likes it. That may not be helpful at all for you but it seems to help with my stubborn DH! 😂

PlantPotting · 06/06/2020 09:51

If you don't like Trent how about Tristan?

ReginaGeorgee · 06/06/2020 09:51

Also I think the names are all similar apart from Elliot. I find Elliot fits in with the Alexander, Benjamin style names.

I really love Austin. Clancy is lovely too and really different!

Ricekrispie22 · 06/06/2020 09:51

Can you find a name that you like but has a nickname/shortening that your DH likes, or vice versa?

For example, you might like Clifford, but your DH prefers Cliff or Ford.
Or Jason (Sonny)
Jackson (Jax)

Alternatively, Trent reminds me of Rhett, which is not dissimilar to Emmett.

neighbourhoodwitch · 06/06/2020 09:52

I think Jamie is lovely.

december2020 · 06/06/2020 09:52

Hmmm! Also fair point, they have similarities.
His other suggestions have been along the line of Octavius, Atlas and Ezekiel - also not for me.

For some reason we don't like each other's suggestions at all- I don't know why.
It could possibly be down to connotations of the names (like Trent reminds me of trench foot).

But it means we're back to square one with no names.

To me you have very different styles although they both have a cowboy feel to them.

How about?

Jethro
Leland
Landon
Garrett
Joel
Tate
Beau
Reed
Levi
Emmett

ReginaGeorgee · 06/06/2020 09:55

What about Soren? That's another Scandi name you may both like?

december2020 · 06/06/2020 09:57

@ReginaGeorgee sounds like my DH! I'll take a leaf from your book where we do it together so it's his idea! Or figure out how to promote Austin better (though it's currently a firm veto).

@PlantPotting yes I like Tristan! Thank you!!

@Ricekrispie22 loving Rhett! And Emmett! Thank you!

@neighbourhoodwitch also love Jamie but it's an ex so I don't think it would go down too well! I also absolutely love Axl but also an ex - gah!

The nd him that you will register the baby and make the decision so it's in his interests to co-opetate.
I think his latest suggestions are awful, the poor child has to live with the name.

stophuggingme · 06/06/2020 10:05

I’m a firm believer in babies looking like they “suit” a name
See when he or she is born

Thankfully my three matched their names so I appreciate I might be a little blasé when it comes to my theory. 😬

JoeExoticsPrinceAlbert · 06/06/2020 10:06

Troy
Heston
Gulliver
Miles
Jethro
Eli
Silas
Dawson

december2020 · 06/06/2020 10:12

@babynamelover loving Landon, Reed, Levi and Emmett - thank you!! Yes they definitely do have a bit of a cowboy vibe come to think of it!

@ReginaGeorgee Soren is a strong scandi name but living in the UK makes me a little worried he'd get teased due to the Soreen bread

@emilybrontescorsett I know right!I've told him this! It makes me wonder if he's coming up with terrible other names to wind me up and make me consider his short list more - so sneaky. Absolutely no chance we'd ever name a boy Ezekiel or similar! Not while I'm still breathing.

@stophuggingme good call! Maybe a list of 3 names or similar to see if they suit any of them best.

@JoeExoticsPrinceAlbert miles is great!! Thank you!

You're leaning toward Southern American male names. Maybe have a look at what else falls in that category?

december2020 · 06/06/2020 10:16

@esmereldaP very true! Hopefully a name in the wider category would be one DH would consider

OP posts:
NameChange30 · 06/06/2020 10:17

Soren sounds nothing like Soreen!
I know one. It's a lovely name.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/06/2020 10:19

Emerson nn Emmett
Lyall
Crispin
Felix
Merrick
Ray

december2020 · 06/06/2020 10:30

@NameChange30 I know this, it's a solid name from where I'm from, but a little hesitant kids would match it to Soreen

@WaxOnFeckOff love the username! Loving Emerson and ray! Also love Felix but my cousin called her son that. Thank you!

NameChange30 · 06/06/2020 10:39

Yes you already made both those points.
Good luck finding a name you and your partner both like.
