Wulfric/Wolfric

I can't believe I'm considering this but partner loves old english/anglo saxon names and would love to name our little boy Wolfric/Wulfric (not sure what spelling we would use).

We had settled on a very modest, normal boys name because I don't like anything too 'out there' or 'try hard'.

I wanted our boy to have a strong, neutral name that wouldn't stand out but isn't too boring.

However when he mentions Wolfric to other family members, they think it's a fabulous name and can't understand why I'm against it.
I'm really not against it, I think it's fab too, and love the idea of Wolfie for a nn for a little boy.

I'm just worried what other people will think, and worried that I'll be embarassed or hesitant when having to tell people his name, if that makes sense?

What do you think of this name? And Wolfie as a nn?

Yep. Owen Wulfric. Not Wulfric as first name - too much.

I prefer Owen Wulfric though. I think it flows well.

I love it! I've met an adult Wulfric and he loved his name too.

Love it! Cool and an actual name all at once.
If you make Owen the middle name he has a sensible option if he wants it, but I bet he won’t.

I have a good friend named Wulfric and his nn is Wulfy and everyone loves it - but more importantly he absolutely suits it to a T. Whether he's grown into it or not I'm not sure - but knowing him, a less out-there name would not suit him.

I love Owen Wulfric with Wolfie as a NN.
Then the child has the option to use Owen when he’s older if he prefers.
I have grown up with a NN from birth. But when I went into my 1st career job, I opted for my 1st name. But my OH, family & friends all use my NN xx

Would you pronounce the 'ch' at the end? The Old English pronunciation would be 'Wulfritch', not 'Wulfrick', if you see what I mean. I do love Anglo-Saxon names :-) Keep threatening my OH to call our firstborn Aethelstan!

DD is Astrid though, so you can tell I'm not averse to 'try hard' names.

I don't like Owen, more because the Owens I've known have been knobs rather than the name itself though.

I prefer Leofric to Wulfric, personally. But I do quite like it. I'd love to see more Anglo-Saxon names making a comeback. They're so cool.

Gosh I'm SO torn ...It's a marmite kind of name it seems.
I do like it for a grown man, I think it's very strong and I like that it is an old English name. I'm just worried about the baby/teenage years. If he hates it I will feel so guilty.

I love it. I think it might be the best name in the world, actually. We had it on our list until we discovered baby is a girl. There was a Wulfric thread on here fairly recently, with many positive comments, and some details about pronunciation which might be of interest to you. Oh, I’d be so utterly delighted to meet a man called Wulfric. I can imagine he’d be absolutely gorgeous!

I love it. I also adore Anglo Saxon names and wanted it for DS but chickened out. DS found out recently and was gutted. he thinks it's such a cool name he's been threatening to change his name to Wulfric when he leaves home.

I love it too. I have a Wilfred and one of the deciding factors was that 'Wolf/'Wolfie' could be a feasible nickname (although, as it goes, this hasn't happened. Yet. We're close with Wilfie, though!)

I totally get what you mean about potential embarrassment. I get that a bit when I tell people my son's name (not helped by the few clearly not impressed reactions we've had!) but I'm coaching myself to feel confident in our choice because I genuinely love the name.

Not that keen on Owen. Also I wouldn't go for 'Wulfric Owen' because that's a bit too similar to Wilfred Owen.

My DH was also a fan of 'historic' names and I'm a fan of old English ones - but tended to stick to slightly more 'normal' ones.

I took some convincing to come around to a similar name and I'm glad I did. You love it, if anyone says "oooh that's unusual" how will you feel saying yes, I like it ?

Also, if you do go for it and he does end up not liking it, it's not too far of a stretch to shorten/nickname to 'Will'.

As Watercoloursky says, it’s pronounced “Wulfrich” in Old English, but doubt you’re going that authentic?

I like OE names too, but always worry that they fall into the elf/hobbit category.

Not keen. I do like Alaric and Emeric though.

I actually really like it (Wulfric) - go for it.

It's really not that different to names like Wilfred is it so I don't see the problem. And Wulfie is cute! Owen could be middle name in case he hates Wulfric when older.
