Wulfric/Wolfric

I can't believe I'm considering this Confused but partner loves old english/anglo saxon names and would love to name our little boy Wolfric/Wulfric (not sure what spelling we would use).

We had settled on a very modest, normal boys name because I don't like anything too 'out there' or 'try hard'.

I wanted our boy to have a strong, neutral name that wouldn't stand out but isn't too boring.

However when he mentions Wolfric to other family members, they think it's a fabulous name and can't understand why I'm against it.
I'm really not against it, I think it's fab too, and love the idea of Wolfie for a nn for a little boy.

I'm just worried what other people will think, and worried that I'll be embarassed or hesitant when having to tell people his name, if that makes sense?

What do you think of this name? And Wolfie as a nn?

Not sure I can commit to it now that I've had a long think about it. I can't see myself calling a baby Wolfie or Wolfric. As much as I love it for a man, I don't think it works for a baby/toddler/tween/teen Sad

Did your DP ask about Wulfric a few weeks ago, as a dad was canvassing opinions on Wulfric and was getting pretty much universal thumbs up!
I think it's a great name!

whatausername · 29/05/2020 00:51

You've got to be comfortable with it - you'll be introducing him left, right and centre. Would you use it as a middle? Whatever you go with you and DH will have to agree and both of you have to be comfortable with any name you use. The opinions of family and friends don't really come into it.

I actually really like it. Spelt Wulfric.
It does make me think of Dumbledore Grin

I wonder how many of the people who love the name Wulfric have one of their own? Not many I'm guessing.

They love it for YOUR baby OP, but not for their own. That should tell you something.

I like OE names too, but always worry that they fall into the elf/hobbit category

Wolfie makes me think of an awful BBC sitcom called Citizen Smith.

Wolfie Smith was a complete prat.

Less Skyrim for you.

Quickerthanavicar · 29/05/2020 07:07

Go and stand in the park and shout it out as if you are calling him.
Which feels better?
If you are surrounded by Irish Wolfhounds maybe that will be your answer.

I love it! But I don't think I'd be brave enough to name my son Wulfric (surely it has to be a 'u'?). And I don't know why. It is a perfectly valid name, certainly not as out there as some more modern weirdnesses that get used.
May I ask what sort of education he'll be getting? I only ask because I reckon in a comp he'd have problems with Wulfric (and I speak as someone who's own children were educated that way), but possibly at a more elite institution you might get away with it. Thoughts?

Wow- no! Great name for a dog though.

Ellmau · 29/05/2020 08:42

I like it! Spelt Wulfric, but Wolfie is quite cute for a little one.

I used to know a Wulf.

For the other poster, Elswyth is lovely.

AragornsManlyStubble · 30/05/2020 09:50

I love it, but I do have an unusual animal named child that everyone on here loathed and told me I’d ruined their life.

She loves it, and everyone else agrees it suits her.

I love Wulfric and can absolutely imagine it on a little boy. If going for the ‘ric’ ending pronunciation could you use ‘Ric’ as a NN as a child?

mum2jakie · 30/05/2020 09:51

Tell him to change his name to it and see if he's as keen after a few months...

TheVanguardSix · 30/05/2020 09:59

What about Theodoric or Alaric? Aelred? I have a cousin named Redmond. We call him Red.

Thank you for replies, I've decided it can't be a first name, however I'n happy for it to be a middle name Smile I think that's a fair compromise

I think you've made the right choice.

IVflytrap · 30/05/2020 22:44

I went to school with a Wulfric 20+ years ago. His parents were from different countries in Asia originally, so I find it quite funny that a previous poster implied you would choose it for racist reasons. None of us as teenagers had any issues with his name or teased him about it, but some supply teachers did obvious double-takes when taking the register.

As you don't know whether your son would be the type who could roll with such an unusual name, I think keeping it as a middle is the way to go.

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 31/05/2020 19:10

@IVflytrap Yes middle name it is, and we're all happy about it so win win. We're going with the Wulfric spelling too Smile
