DD2 is due in a few weeks. DD1 has a Gaelic/Irish name (we are Scottish). Surname will start with Mc. We’re down to Martha or Evelyn, which does everyone prefer? Middle name will likely be violet after a family member.

Evelyn

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 23/05/2020 09:31

Is Evelyn pronounced Eve-lyn or Ev-er-lyn? Will it irritate you that it will be mispronounced 50% of the time whichever one you choose?

I like both your names and both forms of Evelyn, btw.

CurlyEndive · 23/05/2020 09:32

Martha. Evelyn is likely to be shortened to Eve or Evie, which are super popular at the moment.

Littleelffriend · 23/05/2020 09:33

Evelyn not ee if you know what I mean? I’ve never heard it pronounced with an r in the middle.

Evelyn is a beautiful name. I am not a fan of Martha.

Teacaketotty · 23/05/2020 09:34

Evelyn is lovely - not overly keen on Martha if I’m really honest.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 23/05/2020 09:34

You mean Ev-Lyn? Still lovely, anyway.

Apolloanddaphne · 23/05/2020 09:35

Scottish people would never pronounce Evelyn with an r in the middle. it would be Ev-lyn or Eve-lyn.

I prefer Martha.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 23/05/2020 09:37

I love Martha. Evelyn will always be pronounced at least two ways, and become Evie as a PP said.

Adelais · 23/05/2020 09:38

I prefer Martha

tiredandemosh1 · 23/05/2020 09:38

Martha is lovely

Littleelffriend · 23/05/2020 09:39

Hmm yes Martha is my favourite but DP prefers Evelyn. Do you think Martha would be shortened to anything?

BeMorePacific · 23/05/2020 09:39

I like Martha, but my sister can’t pronounce her “th” sound which is quite a common speech impediment. So she’s likely to get Marfa quite a lot.
Evelyn is lovely too. More popular though xx

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 23/05/2020 09:46

Martha.
Evelyn doesn’t normally get pronounced as Eve-Lyn in Scotland.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 23/05/2020 09:51

I only know one Martha - she's 19 and it's never been abbreviated.

userabcname · 23/05/2020 09:54

Martha. Evelyn has the annoying pronunciation issue and there are loads of them, along with all the Evies, Evas etc.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 23/05/2020 09:55

I love Martha, when I was pregnant I had Martha or Marte on my girls list. The only Evelyns I know are older women so I don't associate it with a child.

catsarebetterthandogs9 · 23/05/2020 09:59

DD is Martha. She gets lovely compliments on her name. I did have to ask MIL to stop calling her "Marf" but she's the only one who ever attempted it, and I wouldn't usually be so finicky but it was awful! I'm not a massive fan of Evelyn, I pronounce that Ev-eh-lyn which nobody else on here seems to do Grin

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 23/05/2020 10:04

Lovely names. With a Mc surname I am also learning towards Evelyn as it's a "ma" "ma" sound.

Martha McCready
Evelyn McCready

In my case my Christian name and married surname have exactly the same vowel sounds three times. It's annoying and seems to really confuse people so I have to repeatedly spell it. So I'm biased.

Littleelffriend · 23/05/2020 10:06

Oh god marfa would be awful

mistermagpie · 23/05/2020 10:07

I prefer Martha because of the inevitable pronunciation issues with Evelyn.

FWIW we have a Mc surname and DS1 has a name beginning with M, I think it sounds great!

Spied · 23/05/2020 10:11

Martha.

I automatically say Ever- Lyn for Evelyn.
I did as I read the post.

Peachbubble · 23/05/2020 10:25
