DD2 is due in a few weeks. DD1 has a Gaelic/Irish name (we are Scottish). Surname will start with Mc. We’re down to Martha or Evelyn, which does everyone prefer? Middle name will likely be violet after a family member.

My friends dd is Evelyn and it’s never been shortened. They planned to shorten it to Evie but she doesn’t suit it. It’s a lovely name! I don’t like Martha at all.

Happyhusband · 23/05/2020 10:40

Up the ante. Go for Eibhlin.....

Bringmewineandcake · 23/05/2020 10:48

Martha is lovely

FrownPrincess · 23/05/2020 10:51

Martha is lovely, especially with a Mc name - alliterative names are always more memorable IMO

sweetnosugar · 23/05/2020 10:59

Evelyn
I like Martha but so many people pronounce it ‘Marfa’ .. not sure if it’s laziness or they generally cannot pronounce the TH.

Rainbowqueeen · 23/05/2020 11:01

Martha

Littleelffriend · 23/05/2020 11:02

Now I’m not sure if I like either lol. Pronunciation issues with both. Zara was our third choice.........

I prefer Evelyn.

@catsarebetterthandogs9 I pronounce it Ev-eh-lyn too! I think people count it as an Ever-lyn pronunciation, but you're not alone! There's dozens of us! Dozens!

babynamelover · 23/05/2020 11:06

Martha or Marnie is lovely too. Good luck 😊

OhTheRoses · 23/05/2020 11:07

Martha aways makes me think a bit hard done by as in the Mary and Martha story bit I think Evelyn works better with a Mc surname.

What about Mhairi. I know a lovely Mhairi, pronounced Varie.

Xara or Xanthe

OhTheRoses · 23/05/2020 11:08

I think Marfa depends on the social demographic.

Literaryseed · 23/05/2020 11:09

Another vote for Martha.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/05/2020 11:10

Martha.

Eve-lyn, Ev-lyn battle aside, Evie Eva Evlyn is soo popular

glitterfarts · 23/05/2020 11:13

Martha Mc.... Lovely and rolls off the tongue

seriousandloyal · 23/05/2020 11:30

Evelyn is nicer

TheSweetestHalleluja · 23/05/2020 11:49

Zara is lovely!

123Dancewithme · 23/05/2020 11:49

Martha. I’m bored of all the Evie Eva Ava names.

RumpoleoftheBaileys · 23/05/2020 11:49

Martha

LotusClover · 23/05/2020 11:51

Evelyn by a country mile. I find Martha to be very old fashioned and I don't like how it sounds. I prefer the "ever-lyn" pronunciation though - I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure this is the more widely used pronunciation (and the nicest in my opinion).

Zara is lovely too. Have you considered Clara, Cara, Kara, Tara, Lara?

Littleelffriend · 23/05/2020 12:53

@lotus yes Clara was probably too but with the surname it’s a nono. DP doesn’t like Tara or Lara and we’re quite close to a cara

Top not too

Stuckforthefourthtime · 23/05/2020 12:55

Every second baby girl born to any of my friends and family last year was called some variation on Evie. It's a lovely but so so so popular. I'd go with Martha.

OneKeyAtATime · 23/05/2020 12:57

Martha for me

DramaAlpaca · 23/05/2020 12:58

Evelyn or Zara for me, I think Martha is a bit drab.

I pronounce Evelyn EV-lyn. I might be wrong, but I think most people in Ireland and Scotland say it that way.

MikeUniformMike · 23/05/2020 13:00

Martha
