Have found out baby is a girl. DS is Magnus. We were going to go with Margot, but as it’s shooting up the popularity charts at a furious rate, we are going back to the drawing board. Some of the names we like are quite unusual. I’m open to ideas which might be considered mildly bonkers.

I like Loveday (my favourite, but DP says no),
Celeste,
Delphine,
Gaia,
Amaris (sounds too much like amorous, doesn’t it?),
Lennox (DP wrinkled his nose in horror),
Cecilia (can’t have this as my new and very evil stepmother is named Celia),
Joan,
Marianne (doesn’t go with surname, which ends in an ‘an’ sound).

DP has suggested Hero (which I like), and Savannah (which I don’t), and that is pretty much all he can come up with at present.

Would love to hear some of your suggestions, preferably not within the top 100, if poss. Is there an unusual name you’ve always loved but decided not to use? I occasionally see people on here comment they would have loved to have used such-and-such but weren’t brave enough. Thanks, all!

What about Cecily instead of Cecilia? Or still to close? I really like Delphine on your list?
Marigold, Persephone, Amethyst, Magnolia,Coco all ones I've wanted to use but haven't

mylittleavalon · 14/05/2020 16:01

Just thought maybe Magnolia bit close to Magnus. Opal is another one I like

I met a lovely little girl called Alba today .
I loved the name .

Or the song by Fleetwood Mac .

Agree with Delphine.

Augusta? Clarissa? Shame about Cecilia. Agree with your DH about Lennox!

Winnie
Marnie
Maybe too cutesy, but they are two names I adore.

missmouse101 · 14/05/2020 16:18

Damaris, Iolanthe, Hebe, Amber, Yasmin.

CakeCakeCake21 · 14/05/2020 16:19

My names I love but wouldn’t have used are Linnet and Psyche. I like Hebe as well.

whatausername · 14/05/2020 16:21

Antigone.

On a side note, and I know you didn't ask for opinions, but Hero is quite a moniker to live up to. I'm trying to imagine a teenager or middle-aged woman saying, "Hi, I'm Hero." Perhaps it would be better as a middle-name if you love it.

Orphlids · 14/05/2020 16:25

Ooh, some cracking suggestions here, thank you ladies! I do like Coco, but we have a Mimi in the family, and I think that’s got the same feel. Some of your suggestions are already on my list: Diana, Greta, Juno, Farrah (I had a great uncle Farrah, so always thought of it as a man’s name, but I love it for a girl), Juliet... I do like a Shakespearean name.

@whatausername, ha ha, I would love the opportunity to introduce myself with a name that might make eyebrows shoot up! But yes, I know what you mean.

Obéline
Alizéa
Pearl
Primrose

@missmouse101, I love Damaris, but was worried a bit by the Dam at the beginning. Will people think of damn, damnation?

missmouse101 · 14/05/2020 16:43

My friend's adult daughter is called Damaris. Everyone calls her by her full name and as far as I know damn hasn't been a problem. I think it's gorgeous!

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 14/05/2020 16:46

There is a little girl called Britt in DS2's class who has a brother called Magnus. Other sister is Ingrid. I love all of those names

Orphlids · 14/05/2020 16:53

@YoureAllABunchOfBastards, thank you, you genius. Britt has already been suggested and rejected by DP, but Ingrid is certainly going on the list. Love it.

Loveday, Gaia, Lennox and Hero are awful. They will almost certainly lead to bullying at school.

How about:

Azalea
Cadence
Lilac
Bluebell
Roxy
Crystal

They're some of my guilty pleasure names that I don't think are too ludicrous.

Haz1516 · 14/05/2020 16:57

Antonia
Claudia
Miranda
Viola
Selena

elfran · 14/05/2020 17:10

Magnus is such a great name. I actually think Margot's popularity has saved you; they're maybe a bit too similar, and it doesn't feel as rare/special as it once did (and as Magnus still does).

I'd go with something with the same sharp German/Scandi feel, like:

Astrid
Ingrid
Saskia
Heidi
Imogen
Gretchen (most certainly you'll laugh, but I can't help it, it's a fave of mine!)
Claudia
Isolde

ProperVexed · 14/05/2020 17:10

Magnus is superb. I think the following would go with such a fabulous name:
Calliope
Persephone
Clementine
Hermione
Cecily
Constance
