Have found out baby is a girl. DS is Magnus. We were going to go with Margot, but as it’s shooting up the popularity charts at a furious rate, we are going back to the drawing board. Some of the names we like are quite unusual. I’m open to ideas which might be considered mildly bonkers.

I like Loveday (my favourite, but DP says no),
Celeste,
Delphine,
Gaia,
Amaris (sounds too much like amorous, doesn’t it?),
Lennox (DP wrinkled his nose in horror),
Cecilia (can’t have this as my new and very evil stepmother is named Celia),
Joan,
Marianne (doesn’t go with surname, which ends in an ‘an’ sound).

DP has suggested Hero (which I like), and Savannah (which I don’t), and that is pretty much all he can come up with at present.

Would love to hear some of your suggestions, preferably not within the top 100, if poss. Is there an unusual name you’ve always loved but decided not to use? I occasionally see people on here comment they would have loved to have used such-and-such but weren’t brave enough. Thanks, all!

Ooh, Isolde is good! I would add Xanthe as well.

FoxtrotOscarPoppet · 14/05/2020 17:13

Eleanor
Adeline
Violet

@elfran, I’m not laughing, I rather like Gretchen. One of my favourites is Gertrude, but it seems I’m alone here! I really like the hard Germanic sounds too. I’d like to use Isolde, as I love Wagner, but it hasn’t got that sharpness to it. Astrid I love, but a dear pal has a little Astrid. And I have already suggested Saskia to DP, but it was rejected. Ingrid is going on the list! Thanks you.

@Orphilids glad I'm not alone! I just love those consonant-heavy clunky sounds. Anything too soft and pretty turns me right off.

I also love Greek myth names in a nerdy way, but don't think I'll ever use them as they don't feel "right" for a child of mine (maybe on a future dog). I do love the suggestions of Calliope and Xanthe for you. Oh, and I left off Petra from my original list: that would fit with Magnus, I think.

PissOffStayAtHomeDogMum · 14/05/2020 17:31

Gertrude 😍😍

If I had another DD, it would be high up on my list.

PissOffStayAtHomeDogMum · 14/05/2020 17:38

Presumably Cosima is ruled out by there being a Mimi in your family?

Orphlids · 14/05/2020 18:13

@PissOff, let’s you and I bring Gertrude back!

@elfran, yes I like Greek myth names too. Anything a bit geeky is right up my street. I was chatting to a woman, and she and her DH were both scientists - they’d named their DD Faraday, nn Farrah. I thought that was just wonderful!

Just wanted to say I love Joan, and Magnus and Joan sound lovely together

A few more unusual names I like

Bryony
Isadora
Pandora
Aleydis
Olive

farmermum7 · 14/05/2020 21:44

Magnus is a great name and Ingrid would sound lovely with it. An Old Norse name I love is Vaila, it's the name of an Island in Shetland and sometimes used as a girls name there.

Demelza
Sigrid
Hedy (Hedy Lamarr was actual a scientist as well as an actress!)

Huge thanks to you all for your wonderful suggestions! So many of you have given me ideas which are now genuine contenders. And many more which I have also already been thinking of - Erika, Lavinia, Camila to name but a few. Thank you for putting such thought into your responses. I am delighted with your suggestions!

Magnus is spectacular. It was on our longlist for DS and this is making me want to bring it back! (Wasn’t sure I was brave enough to use it).

Love pp suggestion of Frida.

Imogen
Freya
Greta
Thea
Xanthe
Ianthe
Iona

Blursula · 14/05/2020 23:02

LizzieLoafer · 14/05/2020 23:07

Merryn

Orphlids · 14/05/2020 23:07

@Blursala, you really should put Magnus back on your list! I think at the beginning, I felt it was a bit of a brave choice, but I’m so glad we picked it. Other people’s opinions aren’t particularly important to me, but I must say, we have had such positive reactions, it has been lovely. Some people get quite excited about the name - especially men, for some reason!

My DS is called Magnus too, lovely name!

My favourite girls name was Lydia if that helps, but we couldn't use it in the end (a family member used it while I was pregnant) so my daughter is called something else.

mistermagpie · 14/05/2020 23:17

Others on my list were Hazel, Claudia, Sadie, Mirren, Edith

BeforeIPutOnMyMakeup · 14/05/2020 23:49

If you cannot have Astrid you can have Estrid.

Alina
Birta
Elin
Frida
Ida
Ingrid
Iris

Some of the names are actually names of people I know.

TempsPerdu · 14/05/2020 23:52

Love your style OP! Magnus is a brilliant name, and I agree with others that you were ‘saved’ by the newfound popularity of Margot, which doesn’t feel quite so special in comparison. Magnus and Margot also sounds a bit matchy for my taste.

Really like Gaia - we seriously considered it for DD but we weren’t quite adventurous enough in the end and were worried about potential teasing. I’ve always had a soft spot for Loveday too, but would probably only dare to use it as a middle name. Also quite like Delphine.

DD is Greta, which I see has been suggested a few times. Other more unusual names on our shortlist were:

Frida
Linnet
Clover
Viola
Honor
Aster
Vita
Sylvia
Merryn

Hope you find something you love.

K1mberlylauren · 14/05/2020 23:58

Damaris is a beautiful name and unusual
