I have no idea which one to pick, I'm torn between them so is DP.

I like Lucas and Marshall. I love surnames as first names. They are a popular choice in Scotland.

RaininSummer · 13/05/2020 19:54

Percy? Never met a wee Percy and that was my granddad's name.

VisionQuest · 13/05/2020 19:54

I don't think you can really name a child Ernie. It would need to be Ernest. Neither of which are particularly nice!

So I'd go with Sidney. Or Sydney

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 13/05/2020 19:58

Definitely Sidney!!!

Fiflowertot · 13/05/2020 19:59

Definitely Ernie!! I actually really love this name.

I was at college 16 years ago with the coolest skater/artist/musician (he played saxophone IIRC) guy who I had a huge crush on and he rejected me.Grin

He was a Sid and I cannot imagine the name on any but the coolest child.

Definitely Sidney.

Fiflowertot · 13/05/2020 20:03

Sydney where I live is a girls name, there is a couple of Sydney’s in the local mum and baby group.
As you don’t like nicknames I think Ernie is absolutely fine as a name in its own right! It’s not overused, and IMO it suits a baby to a grown man.

AragornsManlyStubble · 13/05/2020 20:03

Though he had it spelt ‘Sydney’. Much cooler no?

Midnightdream · 13/05/2020 20:04

@RaininSummer I LOVE percy more than Ernie but I hate the slang definition for it. My Grandad is called Percy.

Both not great

Midnightdream · 13/05/2020 20:08

@Apolloanddaphne I do like Marshall, it was after Marshall Mathers aka Eminem Blush I've been a fan for a very long time. Hence the Stanley Grin

Apolloanddaphne · 13/05/2020 20:11

Ah I get the Eminem reference.

Seeing as you are good sport and not offended by people not liking your names I will concede and allow you Sidney. Sid could be cool, Ernie is never cool. He was my DD's driving instructor. A lovely man and the patience of a saint, but the very opposite of cool!

babynamelover · 13/05/2020 20:16

Sidney to Ernie but if Ernie definitely a longer form Ernest is pretty cool.

I like both. But my cats are Bert and Ernie. People constantly ask Ernie where his milk float is! I think both Sidney and Ernie would be lovely. There won't be 6 in each class they go to!

IKEA888 · 13/05/2020 20:18

toss a coin and if your heart sinks at the one it comes up with choose the other

Mumma4262 · 13/05/2020 20:19

I love both of them!

DS2 was going to be called Sidney, it doesn’t seem to be very loved on internet forums, but that isn’t the reason why we didn’t use it.

I adore the name and we would have used it this time round but we are having a girl.

Midnightdream · 13/05/2020 20:20

@Apolloanddaphne I think everyone has different tastes and I would rather someone be blunt!

@babynamelover I had Cecil but everyone HATED it on here! I do like Cedric but doesnt do it for me.

Sidney/Sid. Ernie has too many associations (milkman, Sesame Street) for me. Also I find ”ie” names a bit cutesy on a grown adult.

Ernest is ok though. Can shorten to Ernie or Ern as he chooses.

Bear in mind that either name could end up being fashionable in a few years time, especially given responses on here, as names go through cycles. If you chose them because they are unusual then beware. You’d be better off picking a timeless name than an “old man” name if you want to avoid this.

Giganticshark · 13/05/2020 20:27

Earnest? Arnold /Arnie?

seriousandloyal · 13/05/2020 20:32

Definitely Sidney

OhTheRoses · 13/05/2020 20:40

Tell Sid British Gas share sale in the 80s
Ernie - the fastest milkman in the west

Ralph is rather lovely: Magnus, Arthur, Xavier all go with it.

RuthW · 13/05/2020 20:44

Sidney and Ernest are lovely. Ernie is half a name and awful.

BabyDust13 · 13/05/2020 20:57

I love Ernie ❤️

LadyMuck111 · 13/05/2020 20:59

I love the name Sidney
