Cohen?

OH has been so set on Arlo and for him to suggest anything else is a miracle. His suggestion today was Cohen. I'm not sure what I think - I know it has Jewish connections, but after saying it aloud a lot it's sort of growing on me. There were over 160 Cohen's born in the UK last year.

Thoughts?

It is Conan the barbarian. Not Cohen.
Sonny is a bit ridiculous on an adult man. It sounds like a nickname to me.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 01/05/2020 11:01

I love it, slightly biased it's my nephews name.

Pemba · 01/05/2020 11:39

Like pp said, it's Conan the Barbarian. With a 'n' in the middle. Fairly similar to Cohen and inoffensive. Would this be a possibility OP?

MikeUniformMike · 01/05/2020 11:48

Gowan?

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 01/05/2020 13:18

Don't like flynn either sorry

Lynda07 · 01/05/2020 13:36

Cohen is a surname surely. Think Leonard Cohen. It is a very Jewish name and would be a bit odd for a non Jew to have it, it's not like Luke or Noah, it's a surname.

MrsMonicaBing · 01/05/2020 13:57

I know a little Kohan, would you use that instead?

Carouselfish · 01/05/2020 14:28

I never know if it's said Co-en or more Cone. I knew a Dutch Coen that was pronounced like a cross between Coon/Kern.

SwiftlySwifty · 01/05/2020 15:23

We LOVE the name Flynn - would definitely be at the top of our list if there wasn't already one in the (distant) family. Great name!

Seagull94 · 01/05/2020 16:05

@SwiftlySwifty thank you, I think Flynn is gorgeous too! Think we're leaning towards that!xx

I’m Jewish and I would find it a bit offensive as a first name for a non Jew given its significance to Jews.

june2007 · 01/05/2020 16:21

It,s not just for Jews it has links in Christian history. (well that's not surprising is it.) Also apparently Kahn is a form of the name and I associate that more with muslims. So Jews can,t claim it.

WomanIsTaken · 01/05/2020 16:36

How about Koan, as in a zen riddle ("What is the sound of one hand clapping?" type of thing), pronounced similarly, like Ko-uhn, when I have encountered it in meditation circles?

Umnoway · 01/05/2020 17:49

It’s a Jewish surname.

Umnoway · 01/05/2020 17:50

it has links in Christian history

Judaism is the oldest religion in the world and Jesus was Jewish.

june2007 · 01/05/2020 22:02

Yes so it is also there fore Christian isn,t it. (Since it come from the old Testament.)

CayrolBaaaskin · 01/05/2020 22:16

@june2007 a Cohen is a Jewish priest who is purportedly a descendant of Aaron. We still have cohens who bless the congregation every shabbat. Not everything that’s Jewish is Christian. I don’t believe any mainstream Christian religion has cohens.

If I met a non Jew called Cohen, I would think it was pretty offensive and the parents had given their child a name and hen they were too ignorant to know the meaning.

CongratulationsFlowers

It's a beautiful sounding name and I can really see how you're so drawn to it.

With that said i really don't think it would right to use unless you are Jewish.

We're living in sensitive times and it's important to respect traditions and histories of our fellow humans especially those who have been persecuted and treated as second class citizens.

I personally had to have a talk with a white woman last year who intended to give her dd an Indian name. The white lady, as well meaning and "educated" as she was, had already borrowed an Indian "second name" for herself as an "enlightened" yoga instructor that she went by (and dropped as it suited her) and I had to walk away because she just wouldn't see the cultural appropriation and became quite defensive. I cringed all the way home.

I think your appreciation of the sound of the name Cohen is shared by most people in the comments - it really is beautiful sounding name, but is not yours to use and that's ok - there are plenty of beautiful boy names and you will find the one!

Marimari93 · 01/05/2020 23:46

Nooo please don't use Cohen. White women (I'm assuming you're white) already have a bad rep atm due to cultural appropriation.

It's a lovely name but you must be Jewish to use.

How about:
Colben
Colin
Colt
Cole
Bishop
Elias
Isaac
Aaron
Alfred
Caspian
Dylan
Ethan
Jasper
Thomas

I tried to choose beautiful, gentle names as you clearly have wonderful taste as Cohen is stunning but don't use it lol good luck

Seagull94 · 02/05/2020 07:22

@87Callista thank you for your lovely comment ♥️

Cohen the barbarian is what I thought too. It's from Terry Pratchett's Discworld and is a play on Conan for those that were confused at the reference 😅

Some nice names been suggested though OP.
