Preston-Clarkson

Are those names too similar to hyphenate? Is it more of a mouthful than your average hyphenated surname?

Or take the ends of both names: Sonton
Ok I've had 🍷

I think Clarkson Preston (that order). It’s marginally better.

I’d do it without the hyphen but still have them both as last names, but no reason not to hyphen if that’s what you want to do.

It’s not great but it’s a surname and we don’t tend to have choices with surnames. Mine’s awful but it’s my surname and I’m not going to change it.

Whydoesit · 15/03/2020 06:40

Now I’m thinking about it I think the general loose “rule” with double barrelled surnames (I’m sure there are excepts) is that the longer or more cumbersome name goes first and the shorter name last.
The reason why yours sounds a bit clunky I guess is that they have a similar ending and both have two syllables however I think I find Clarkson marginally longer (the Clark taking longer to say than Pres) hence Clarkson first.

@donquixotedelamancha

Katarina Johnson-Thompson isn't trans. I don't know what your point is but please don't use trans people as a joke.

So you don't get the joke but are convinced that it's 'using trans people'?

Oh, sorry, you were just virtue signalling weren't you? My bad, carry on.

TotesGodsWill · 15/03/2020 13:36

It is a bit of a mouthful

If you’re not married then use the child’s mother’s name. If you are married then use the child’s mothers name, whether that’s the husbands name, her maiden name or a hyphenated version

Carouselfish · 15/03/2020 15:54

Johnson Thompson is so so awful. The joining of the two noble and ancient families of Johnson and Thompson. Sigh.

s3tut0y3r · 22/03/2020 07:47

What if your child then decides to add his or her surname to his partners with a hyphen? You would have a triple barrelled surname! At some point , someone will have to stop adding! Personally, I think it is nice to have the same surname as my child, so I began to use my married name and changed my daughter's surname too so it was the same as her new brother and step dad. We felt more like a unit....

s3tut0y3r · 22/03/2020 07:51

In years gone by, children often took their mother's maiden name as a middle name. Preston would work as a middle name....

Trans is more than just cutting off a "johnson" as you put it. And is there really any need to make trans people the butt of yet more jokes (they've been marginalised for years).

OP said she didn't get your point, not that she didn't get your joke.

It's perfectly clear OP did not understand the joke, as it is clear that you did not.

Trans is more than just cutting off a "johnson" as you put it.

I didn't put it any way. I referenced another poster refering to adding a Johnson, not removing one.

And is there really any need to make trans people the butt of yet more jokes (they've been marginalised for years).

You clearly don't understand the difference between the subject of a joke and the target. The joke may have referenced the subject of sex reassignment surgery but it was targeted at the double meaning of the previous posters comment. In essence it was a pun.

Abuse of someone for who they are is bad, but suggesting an entire group cannot be referenced in humour because some people are mean is silly and patronising to the group in question.

Are you trans @whatausername? Or are you just claiming we are marginalised snowflakes so you can police others humour?
