Preston-Clarkson

Are those names too similar to hyphenate? Is it more of a mouthful than your average hyphenated surname?

chipsandpeas · 14/03/2020 18:23

sorry sounds like a train station to me

DramaAlpaca · 14/03/2020 18:24

It hasn't done the athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson any harm. Hers is similar.

RandomMess · 14/03/2020 18:25

How about creating a new amalgamated surname? Clarkston?

PieceOfMaria · 14/03/2020 18:26

I take it you are talking about combining surnames and not first names?

Surnames fine, first names NOOOOO.

PieceOfMaria · 14/03/2020 18:27

Oh sorry I see it is a surname.

AurelieFizz · 14/03/2020 18:29

That's not really much of a mash up. It's just putting a T into Clarkson! I don't think a mash up would work.

userabcname · 14/03/2020 18:31

I think it sounds fine

PlantPotting · 14/03/2020 18:32

They are quite similar but who cares if you want a hyphenated surname

PlantPotting · 14/03/2020 18:32
  • sorry I didn’t explain myself very well! What I mean is it’s fine if it’s a hyphenated surname you want
strawberry2017 · 14/03/2020 18:32

I think it sounds to much, it's the ton sound at the end of both names it doest work together x

RandomMess · 14/03/2020 18:34

I was actually thinking Clarkton or Preston-Clark?

Uppingham · 14/03/2020 18:34

Swap the names around. Somehow sounds better to my ear.

whiteroseredrose · 14/03/2020 18:38

Please don't - it's one hell of a mouthful.

NearlyGranny · 14/03/2020 18:39

Your ear will quickly get used to it. It's better than plenty of others. I could mention Rees-Mogg or Saxe-Coburg-Gotha!

MikeUniformMike · 14/03/2020 19:16

Katarina Johnson-Thompson added the Johnson herself.

DramaAlpaca · 14/03/2020 19:41

Did she Mike? I didn't know that.

Blursula · 14/03/2020 19:46

I think it's fine. People will get used to it. I didn't hyphenated our child's surname as I was worried it would be too much of a mouthful and often wish I'd just gone for it!

pilates · 14/03/2020 19:46

It doesn’t flow very well, could you add Preston as a middle name?

MikeUniformMike · 14/03/2020 20:05

@DramaAlpaca, according to a Daily Torygraph article she added it because her mother reverted to her maiden name after she divorced Mr Thompson.

Percypopper · 14/03/2020 21:31

I think it depends on the first name. Also I think Clarkson-Preston sounds slightly better

AurelieFizz · 14/03/2020 22:02

Okay so generally what are your preferences out of:

Preston-Clarkson
Clarkson-Preston
Something else?

OP posts:
lorrainerose · 14/03/2020 23:14

Use your surname?

donquixotedelamancha · 14/03/2020 23:19

Katarina Johnson-Thompson added the Johnson herself.

It's always about trans people with you lot :-)

UnexpectedItemInTheShaggingAre · 14/03/2020 23:20

We’ve (DP and I being the we) spent a solid five minutes saying both ways and we think, Clarkson-Preston is ever so slightly easier to annunciate

Pinkypink · 14/03/2020 23:21

I prefer Clarkson Preston -bc I think the other way round would end up being Preston Clarkston
