Lola

OH has thrown Lola into the mix and I can’t decide if I like it or not. I don’t hate it, our DD1 has a short two-syllable name and generally I prefer those over longer/fussier names.

Just looking forward get general thoughts. Middle name is Jean. Thanks :)

I think it's beautiful and very underused

MsTSwift · 16/02/2020 22:25

Awful sorry. And weirdly popular. Has dodgy sexual connotations (stripper / transvestite) cannot imagine looking at new born and thinking “Lola”

mamablondie · 17/02/2020 08:01

@Whatsyourflava At the moment our shortlist is:

Holly
Jasmine (would change the middle name)
Lillian/Lily

I find we are very quick to move through girls names, we have a solid boys choice though. My girls list has changed quite a few times.

Jasmine is lovely.

BeardieWeirdie · 17/02/2020 08:31

Our dog is Lola because we love the Kinks’ song.

Whatsyourflava · 17/02/2020 08:35

Oh I love Holly 🥰 Really lovely list 😃 @mamablondie
What’s your boy choice at the mo. xx

KatherineJaneway · 17/02/2020 08:36

I like the name but I can now hear Barry Manilow singing Copacabana in my head 😁

mamablondie · 17/02/2020 12:10

@Whatsyourflava it’s Isaac for a boy x

I (personally) know two strippers who use the name. But that doesn't have to be a problem if it isn't for you :)

EllaWallace · 17/02/2020 14:17

I wouldn't think of a stripper personally, it's pretty and Lola Jean sounds great.

If it was me, my reservation would be that it's more of a cute little girl name than a grown woman's name.

Astronica · 18/02/2020 05:44

I don't like Lola. Lila and Laila seem much nicer to me if you want those sounds. Lilian/Lily from your list is much better, and my favourite from your list. Holly is nice, but not keen on Jasmine.

Josie465 · 18/02/2020 06:38

Lola Jean sounds sweet - would suit a little girl just fine. I’m not sure about an adult called Lola but only because I’ve never met any 🤷‍♀️

Wintersun13 · 18/02/2020 18:52

Lola sounds like a diminutive to me, I think a grown woman may have a hard time with such a girly name (as in a name that would suit only a very young little girl).

I like Lillian though I don't love the Lilly diminutive.

Holly is fine though I like Olivia better (similar sounds but Olivia feels more substantial to me !)

Jasmine is okay.

Is it me or do you have a preference for nature/flower names ? If so how about Rowan, Sorrel, Aspen, Hazel, Ivy...?

Peacenquiet2 · 18/02/2020 19:02

No matter what u choose, someone will associate it with something/one unless u choose batshit crazy made up name. I work in a primary school and there's a Lola and I didn't think of anything other than it's her name, even though I do know of songs with Lola/Charlie and lola in etc. If you like it then choose it

user1019273703 · 18/02/2020 19:05

My little one is called Lola. I love it, and she sings the kinks song!

Chocolatedaim · 18/02/2020 19:06

I was going to suggest Hazel or Ivy but see someone else has beat me to it!

We have a lovely (adult) friend called Lola, she is a strong female, hilarious, and so genuine, I just smile when I hear the name. Plus her niece calls her Coca Cola Lola which I think is fab

DramaAlpaca · 18/02/2020 19:11

I like the name, it's very pretty, but I'm old enough for my associations with the name to be less than positive, unfortunately.

SisterAgatha · 18/02/2020 20:41

I actually really like Dolores. Makes me think of Grease 2, and it’s more grown up. You can use Lola or Lo or whatever for short and it gives the kid options.

aprilfools19 · 19/02/2020 04:18

Not a fan. I don’t know why and it probably sounds very judgmental but it’s always sounded “cheap” and tacky to me

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 19/02/2020 09:30

I've never really liked it tbh. Although there's quite a few round out way so presumably I'm in a minority here.

I don't think the Kinks association is an age thing either. It's a a classic song, it'll have longevity and will still be sung when your kid is in their teens.

"I'm not young but I can't understand why she walked like a woman but talked like a man. Lola, lo-lo-lo-lo-Lola....."

Bezalelle · 19/02/2020 11:11

It had a moment about 8 years ago. Still a dog/stripper name.

butwhateverfor · 19/02/2020 11:19

Lolita, and the weird Eurotrash porn lady Lolo Ferrari spring to mind. Lola Jean also sounds too much like Norma Jean.

OnABeachSomewhere · 19/02/2020 11:29

Love Holly, Jasmine and Lily.

Layla, Lena, Laura instead of Lola?

rachel59pink · 19/02/2020 12:10

I love this name! It's one of my options also Smile

123Dancewithme · 19/02/2020 22:56

Don’t like it, definitely a stripper name.
