Elise? Ellise? Ellis?

Hi everyone,

I’d like to find a girl name that has similar pronunciation with “Alice” but starts with “El.”

I like the sound “EH – l – ih – s” but not sure how it is spelled in the US.
How would you spell it?

Here are some “El” options I found online:
Ellis. (Boy name?)
Elise. (Pronounces “E–lees”? Don’t really like the sound of “E.”)
Ellise. (How does it pronounce?)

Please let me know if you have any thoughts!
I’d appreciate all the suggestions.

Do you like Eliza?

WWWV · 15/02/2020 06:50

I’d stay with the Ellis spelling if you want it pronounced like that.

headlicehelp · 15/02/2020 07:33

I only know male Ellis's.

Really like Elise.

Mumma4262 · 15/02/2020 07:40

I have a son called Ellis, but I did used to work with a female Ellis.

Beautiful name either way. It’s more used for boys where I am but it’s perfectly acceptable for a girl.

Elise is beautiful too.

Grufallosfriends · 15/02/2020 07:40

The pronunciation you want is Ellis.

I know a girl called Ellis. It's works well for a girl.

Bluewater1 · 15/02/2020 07:43

Ellis is a boy's name.
Ellise looks like it is spelled incorrectly.
Elise is lovely, it is pronounced Eh-lees

ec10 · 15/02/2020 08:35

Thanks everyone!

I like Elise (Eh-lees) and Ellis. Guess I'll choose between these two.

Ellis gives you the pronunciation that you want. While it's traditionally a masculine name, as surnames were, it's now not unusual for this style of names to be used for girls too (particularly in the US), so currently it's definitely a unisex name. I like it and prefer it over Elise. Elise gives you Eh-lees pronunciation and is the best spelling for that.

Poundcakelindsay · 15/02/2020 13:10

Ellis is perfectly fine for a girl. Ellis is my mums maiden name!

Butterymuffin · 15/02/2020 13:14

Elise is a lovely name for a girl. I would go with that.

Passthewinebottle · 15/02/2020 13:21

I have an Elise. I absolutely love it 💕

She's an Eh-LEES but sometimes gets El-eez

MsChatterbox · 15/02/2020 14:22

I would deffo vote Elise!

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 15/02/2020 14:47

I think maybe Ellyse? I mean it's kinda a made up name because it should either be Alice or Elise (Ee-lyse). But if I saw the spelling Ellyse I'd think Elly-se.

Alyse is pronounced how your friend recommended (uh-lease) and that is a legit name!

I don't like Ellis for a girl. Maybe a middle name but not a first. It is very masculine and reminds me of Ellis Island.

MikeUniformMike · 15/02/2020 14:52

Alise seems naff and like Ellise looks like you can't spell.
Elise is OK.
Ellis is a boy's name but could be given to a girl, I suppose.

FartnissEverbeans · 16/02/2020 18:15

I much prefer Ellis. I think it’s a great name for a girl.

All these posters saying ‘that’s a booyyyy’s naaaame thooooo’ are a bit behind the times tbh. Categories are more fluid than they used to be. And also, nobody cares (except the aforementioned posters).

ehf10 · 15/03/2020 23:13

Elise is traditionally pronounced Eleez and derives from Elizabeth so if you like the 's' sound I think Ellis might be better :)
My name is Elise and some people call me Eleece but majority know that it should sound like 'please'. My French Grandma pronounces my name A-leez which I think is also nice. Teachers, lecturers and most older adults instinctively say Eleez, so I would go for Ellis if you're not keen on the 'z' sound x

hokolo · 15/03/2020 23:20

I don't think it's newly a girls name. I had a female rello called Ellis, born around 1900.

Iwannatellyouastory · 15/03/2020 23:40

How about Alies it’s a Dutch form of Alice and is pronounced Al ese so sounds as if it could start El

AlliKaneErikson · 16/03/2020 00:08

DD’s middle name is Elise (El-ees)- I love the name. I’ve taught a female Ellys (pronounces Ellis).

nonicknameseemsavailable · 16/03/2020 00:11

To me Ellis is a boys name. I have met a girl called it and always thought it was a bit odd. Elise to me is said el eece.

Ellys as suggested would seem more feminine to me than Ellis

123Dancewithme · 19/03/2020 20:58

Ellice

Bouledeneige · 19/03/2020 21:00

Very outing. I have an Elodie.

Bouledeneige · 19/03/2020 21:01

Its french.

RightOnTheEdge · 19/03/2020 21:05

The first Ellis I ever heard of was a girl and it was quite a few years ago now so I don't think it is a new thing for girls to be called.

CaffiSaliMali · 19/03/2020 22:39

I know two people called Ellis - a boy and a girl. It seems to be increasingly used for girls. I knew the girl Ellis first so I don't find it odd on a girl. However, I'm not generally a fan of giving girls traditionally male names. It never happens the other way round - not many little boys are being called Isabel or Sophie.

My Mam was very sniffy about it for the girl as it's a boys name, and sniffy about it for the boy as it was spelt Ellis and not Elis, which is the traditional Welsh spelling.

There's the actor, Elis James, who is male. If you're in Wales I wouldn't use Ellis for a girl.
