All these people calling Freddie a “baby name”?!? I’m a bit confused and shocked. How about Mercury and Flintoff?*

Freddie Mercury was a stage name. His real name was Farrokh Bulsara.

MsMiaWallace · 27/01/2020 13:30

We've got a Freddie.
I love it!
Come on it's after Freddie Mercury. How can it not be a great name!

Surprised by some negativity on here. We've always had positive comments

Love Reggie too! I'm considering it for the next one!

Grufallosfriends · 27/01/2020 13:33

How about Mercury and Flintoff?

Neither have Freddie on their birth certificate. Their real names were Farrokh Bulsara and Andrew Flintoff.

Freddie, Reggie, Teddie, all sound like nicknames or names for pets. Wouldn't most adult men prefer to have the option of being Andrew or Frederick?

Whatsyourflava · 27/01/2020 13:34

@Besidesthepoint if Freddie wasn’t even Mercury’s real name that makes my point even better!! There’s no way it’s a “baby name” if an ambitious adult man actively chose it (when it’s not even his real name)!!

I love the name Freddie. I remember thinking at school what a cool name it was and I still think it now.

ivfbabymomma1 · 27/01/2020 13:37

@jesskir89

My DS is called Freddie and if I have another one I'd like to call him Reggie!

Not helpful but a positive reply at least 😂

Grufallosfriends · 27/01/2020 13:38

His friends called him Freddie at school because they found it easier to say than Farrokh.

So no, he wasn't an adult man and didn't actively choose it.

Sojo88 · 27/01/2020 13:41

Love the name Freddie.

Never thought of Reggie being used for babies these days! It might grow on me, but can't say I like it much now.

Jesskir89 · 27/01/2020 15:57

Thank you for the positive replies ladies unfortunately there are some rude responses but you expect it with a load of women giving their input lol. @BrunoLovesMe my dh loves Frank and Bruce strong names, I'm not too keen myself. @ivfbabymomma1 @msmiawallace love you baby names lol I don't think they're nicknames and despite some people opinions we will be having one of the 2 :)

OP posts:
WeirdPookah · 27/01/2020 15:59

Neither. They are bith diminutive nicknames.

Give a real name and useones of these as a nickname. A grown adult with a cutesy baby name? Think a bit about that.

Lolly920 · 27/01/2020 16:04

Freddie is lovely, traditional and classy! Reggie is awful though, very chavvy!

Jesskir89 · 27/01/2020 16:16

A real name? Define a real name... I'd love to hear what some people are calling their babies. As the title says it will be reggie or freddie so please only give your preference. I'm aware everyone has their opinion but some of them are unwelcome.

OP posts:
Grufallosfriends · 27/01/2020 16:40

Freddie classy and Reggie is chavvy

Really? To me they're both equally cutesy.

Jemstar33 · 27/01/2020 16:40

Shocked at some of these responses! It's amazing how mean some people are behind a keyboard.

Both Freddie and Reggie are lovely names and shortening them from the 'original' is OPs choice.

Jesskir89 · 27/01/2020 16:50

@Jemstar33 the 'mean' people are the ones that will be calling their poor baby the 'unusual' names that the kids hate as they grow up.

OP posts:
missmillimentscardigan · 27/01/2020 16:52

My DS (6) is a Freddie, although he's got Frederick on his birth certificate and close family call him Fred. He really likes having Frederick as his 'real name' on anything formal. Freddie is much more popular as a name than Frederick if that's of interest to you. Best of luck with your baby!

NameChange30 · 27/01/2020 16:54

It's really not "mean" to give honest opinions about a name. It is the whole point of the baby names section! You can't control how people will respond when you post on mumsnet. Of course there are guidelines that everyone should follow but no one is breaking them.

Jemstar33 · 27/01/2020 16:56

@jesskir89 yep, Katie Hopkins springs to mind!

MsMiaWallace · 27/01/2020 16:57

Ours is Freddie on his birth certificate.

Yes Freddie Mercury & Freddie flintoff weren't born with the name 'Freddie' (state the obvious btw) but so what?? Just shows how great it is!!

Jemstar33 · 27/01/2020 17:00

@NameChange30 It's a choice of two names, simple really. No need to chip in with any other comments.

BinkyBam · 27/01/2020 17:02

Love them both but mine was going to be Freddie if she was a he so I'd have to say Freddie!

ALTHOUGH it is getting quite popular, I know 5 Freddie's all of a similar age (3 and under) and only know 1 Reggie. Now I'm not bothered about those things and my girl also has quite a popular name, but others may disagree!

Good luck!

ojo821 · 27/01/2020 17:06

I really don't see the problem about putting Freddie on the BC. I also don't like Frederick OP.

I prefer Freddie as Reggie makes me think of an older person (maybe because it's the name of my uncle).

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 27/01/2020 17:10

I have a Frederick, he's grown up now and has always been known as Fred. My mother calls him Frederick because she loves it. Very few people have ever called him Freddie and personally I wouldn't put a diminutive on a birth certificate. The full name gives them more options as they grow up.

twinkledag · 27/01/2020 17:16

Hate Reggie! So will go for Freddie.

Anniecott · 27/01/2020 17:23

My ds is 17 this week he is a Freddie although does have Frederick on his birth certificate as he is named after his ggf, but this only ever gets used on formal paperwork (or when he's been naughty and then sometimes the big guns come out and the middle name Micheal after his gf gets used as well 😊) I have never thought of it as a cutstie name, he loves his name, hates being called Fred, insists on Freddie.
Insistently if he'd been a girl she would have been Fredericka also known as Freddie, cause my baby was always going to be named after my gf and I didn't care what anyone thought.
So you name your child what you like and ignore any negativity.
Good luck

Mamabear88 · 27/01/2020 17:36

I actually love the name Reggie! I like that better than Freddie. It's more unusual but not ridiculous.
