I’m pretty stuck at the moment. There seems to be a lot of love for both names, but some strong opinions about both too. Re. Rafael, we’re not Italian but would use the Scandinavian spelling as I have Scandi heritage. Re. Rufus, I think it’s such a great human name and have never come across a dog called Rufus, but would have people to think we’ve given our baby boy a dog’s name?! x

I still stand by my vote of Rafael (nickname Raffy) but wanted to remind you that no name is perfect

If you pick Rufus a few people might think “that’s a dog name” but you’re not going to get universal approval for any name. If you pick Oliver some people will think “how dull”. You just can’t control that. We live in quite a conservative (aka boring) area and there’s 2 boys called Wolf.

Would you consider Rafferty though (one last try 🤣)

Rufus. It was our boys name, but alas two girls. Love it. I like Raphael too, this spelling and we considered it but it didn't feel very us in the end

Such a good point, thanks PlantPotting. It seems particularly hard because my daughter’s name has always had such a positive reception and we love it. It’s a Mumsnet favourite too.

FWIW, I gave my DD an Italian name even though no one in our family is even remotely Italian. So what? It suits her.
