Cleo, Grace, Fern or Freya?

These are our current top 4 but I am struggling to decide which one I like best for a girl.

I think they all fit with our surname but nothing is leaping out at me.

Grace - I like this but it is very popular around here and also a bit bland compared to the others.

Cleo - I like how unusual it is but wonder how many Renault Clio jokes she would get...

Fern - I think this is my favourite at the moment but unsure on the spelling. Should it be Fern, Fearne or Ferne?

Freya - I quite like this but is it a bit pretentious?

Also, any other names that follow these sorts of lines? I feel like I have read every baby name book going trying to find some but unfortunately our surname is a bit of an odd one and not a lot goes with it. Begins with a H and ends with a Y.

I love all your names apart from Fern

I had a friend called Fern growing up and I always felt a bit sorry for her as the name sounds so harsh and unfeminine.

formerbabe · 06/01/2020 10:05

Fleur?

FluffyEggsontoast · 06/01/2020 10:12

Here are some of my favourites incase they help

Willa
Imogen
Sadie
Edith / Edie
Margaret /Maggie
Clementine/ Clemmie
Roxanne/Roxanna
Pearl
Delilah
Ottilie (Ottie)
Cora (similar-ish to Cleo)
Eliza
Winter
Jemima
Holly

Cleo is the best on your list. Others are hugely popular.

missmouse101 · 06/01/2020 10:17

I really love Fern, spelt that way. So pretty. Cleo is nice too. Definitely no to dreary old Grace. Freya sounds like fraying to me.

WillingSpringTime · 06/01/2020 10:21

@formerbabe Fleur was on our list but I feel like it is a bit something of nothing if that makes sense. Like I started saying a name and got bored halfway through so ended up with Fleur.

I like Freya the best on the list.
Cleo will definitely just make people think of a Renault.
Grace is okay, I quite like Gracie as a nn
I’m not sure on fern but I don’t know why!

formerbabe · 06/01/2020 10:23

Yes I know what you mean!

WillingSpringTime · 06/01/2020 10:28

@fluffyeggsontoast

Thanks for the suggestions. Some of them have already featured on my lists but have since been removed by DH who vetoed them.

Willa - love this but DH said no 😩
Imogen - I like this but again, very popular around here.
Sadie - doesn't sound right with our surname.
Edith / Edie - old lady name apparently.
Margaret /Maggie - ditto above.
Clementine/ Clemmie - not a fan of full name. Like the nickname but wouldn't go with surname.
Roxanne/Roxanna - again, not a fan. I just imagine Roxy being screamed across a playground and it reminds me of Eastenders?!
Pearl - I like this
Delilah - doesn't fit with surname
Ottilie (Ottie) - I like this name but used to know someone called this and they were the devils spawn so it really tainted it for me :(
Cora (similar-ish to Cleo) - this was on our list but got taken off for some reason? Maybe it will go back on...
Eliza - this was on our list but is a bit of a mouthful when said with our surname
Winter - not a fan of winter but along the same lines, I loved the name Autumn but I was told it was an odd name for a baby due at the end of March.
Jemima - puddleduck
Holly - DH's side of the family have this name already (and several others that all rhyme with this) so feel any names with the 'olly' bit are out.

Love Cleo and Fern (this spelling).

Grace and Freya are a bit boring.

averythinline · 06/01/2020 10:36

Francesca, X

TheVanguardSix · 06/01/2020 10:43

Cleo

Ahitsallover · 06/01/2020 10:44

Grace is the most elegant

envi · 06/01/2020 10:46

Love Grace or Freya

FluffyEggsontoast · 06/01/2020 10:50

@WillingSpringTime who told you the name Autumn was only appropriate for a baby in the autumn? Because there’s been loads of Mumsnet threads recently about “summer” “autumn” and “winter” with an overwhelming majority of Mumsnetters saying it doesn’t matter the season the baby is born in. Infact it’s almost better if they are born out of season as it just shows you picked the name because you like it

Glad Cora is back on the list! Love that name. Also love Cleo and don’t think the association with the car is that strong. Would use

AmazingGreats · 06/01/2020 11:06

Cleo makes me think of Cleopatra not Renault and I like it a lot more than the more common Chloe although both are pretty.

Freya I like a lot. Grace I love but is very popular. Fern is pretty and I like that spelling.

Of the four Cleo is my favourite

MikeUniformMike · 06/01/2020 12:16

Grace - nice but over used as a middle name.

Cleo - like.

Fern - the best spelling.

Freya - I quite like this but is it a bit pretentious? - not pretentious but quite popular

I think Fern is my favourite.

MikeUniformMike · 06/01/2020 12:19

Pick the one that sounds best with your surname.
Most people are known as Firstname Surname.

Flymetothestars · 06/01/2020 13:39

Love Cleo or Freya

How about Greta?
Fern sounds masculine to me

Nonnymum · 06/01/2020 13:45

I dont think of a car at all when I hear the name Cleo. Its just a nice name. If I think of anything it is the film Carry on Cleo and Cleo Laine. The Renault Clio might not even exist when she grown up anyway.
I would think most names have some sort of association with something anyway.

spiderlight · 06/01/2020 13:59

Freya is by far my favourite from your list.

DramaAlpaca · 06/01/2020 14:01

Fern, that spelling, is my favourite, closely followed by Cleo.

AmazingGreats · 06/01/2020 14:04

Other similar names I can think of are Clara and Thea

diddlediddle · 06/01/2020 15:03

Cleo
