Can I have your honest opinions

Have NC as including surname so could be outing.

We are having a boy in a few months and our favourite name is Theodore, to be shortened to Teddy. The problem is our surname. It’s Baird. So when you say Teddy Baird out loud, it sounds a bit like teddy bear.

So with that in mind should we steer clear of the name? We already have a DD who uses a shortened version of her name and the idea was that as she grew she could choose to continue to use the short version or change to the long, and the same with Theodore/Teddy - he could be known as Theo when he got a bit older.

Please be as honest as you like! Would also appreciate suggestions of other names that go with our surname.

Other names we like are

Rory
Flynn
Louie

Louie would go lovely with your surname .
I think Teddy is lovely but I see what you mean
It’s like when people are called Mike Hunt . It just doesn’t sound right lol

AxeOfKindness · 02/01/2020 10:51

Sorry, yes I think he's likely to be teased asking with all the Teresa Greens and Rory Lyons!

AxeOfKindness · 02/01/2020 10:51

*along with

beelzeboob · 02/01/2020 10:54

I wouldn’t give him a name that would make him a target for bullying at school
I always liked the babe Rory

beelzeboob · 02/01/2020 10:54

Name not babe, lol

PinkCrayon · 02/01/2020 10:56

I wouldn't call him teddy as I do think kids would tease him with teddy bear.
Louie is a lovely name though

Rollonspringtime2020 · 02/01/2020 10:58

Just use Theo from the start..

Veterinari · 02/01/2020 11:00

Use Theo

Geneshish · 02/01/2020 11:00

Yeah I would avoid Teddy! Maybe even rory (roary bear).

Louis is nice

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 02/01/2020 11:00

Yes just call him Theo. When he's a teen / adult he might think it's a laugh to be called Teddy Baird but you can't inflict it on him as a child!

Helpmechoose321 · 02/01/2020 11:08

Thanks all, I thought that would be the case but hoped it wouldn’t! Not a huge fan of Theo weirdly enough.

Back to completely blank drawing board 😩

FluffyEggsontoast · 02/01/2020 11:08

I think Theo is lovely and would work fine with surname!

Love your other suggestions of
Rory
Flynn
Louie
But probably like Theo/Theodore best

FluffyEggsontoast · 02/01/2020 11:09

Is it a blank drawing board though @Helpmechoose321 ? You seem like you have already sorted your alternatives

Whoops75 · 02/01/2020 11:12

I wouldn’t use teddy

All your other names are lovely

Helpmechoose321 · 02/01/2020 11:13

They are other names that we like but don’t like any of them enough to choose as a forever name. They were just examples of the types of name we are keen on.

Theodore is the only one we liked enough to call him. I suppose Teddy could just be a pet name we call him at home and Theo/Theodore at school etc

OP posts:
Drum2018 · 02/01/2020 11:13

If you call him Theodore but use Theo from the start, then surely that name will stick. Rory would be my next choice.

FeigningHorror · 02/01/2020 11:15

Theodore is lovely, but if you don’t like it enough to call him by that or the most obvious short form, Theo, it sounds as if it’s actually the name Teddy that you really like...?

CountFosco · 02/01/2020 11:18

Teddy Baird is nothing like Mike Hunt Hmm. One is a cute pun that he may get teased about a bit but it's likely to be good natured. Mike Hunt sounds like a swearword.

Helpmechoose321 · 02/01/2020 11:18

Yes possibly @FeigningHorror , as explained we were would have chosen that as the long version so that when he grew up (even just to primary school age), we could use those names!

OP posts:
FluffyEggsontoast · 02/01/2020 11:34

Edward is also an option if you like nickname Teddy

Or just Ted?

How about the name “Ned”? I love that name

NoSauce · 02/01/2020 11:39

I would use a longer name with Baird personally.

Alexander
Sebastian
Laurence
Gabriel

Helpmechoose321 · 02/01/2020 11:44

@FluffyEggsontoast don’t like the name Edward at all. And we are Scottish so Ned has it’s own problems up here!

@NoSauce I do like the name Alexander.

A few others we have on our “like” list are

Kit
Carter

OP posts:
GreaterSpottedFemale · 02/01/2020 11:44

Don't use Teddy. He will most definitely be teased his entire life, from school right into work.

Theo is nice. Just use that. No need to turn it into a Teddy.

FluffyEggsontoast · 02/01/2020 11:55

Kit is GORGEOUS @Helpmechoose321

I like carter too. Or Parker

FluffyEggsontoast · 02/01/2020 11:57
