Can I have your honest opinions

Have NC as including surname so could be outing.

We are having a boy in a few months and our favourite name is Theodore, to be shortened to Teddy. The problem is our surname. It’s Baird. So when you say Teddy Baird out loud, it sounds a bit like teddy bear.

So with that in mind should we steer clear of the name? We already have a DD who uses a shortened version of her name and the idea was that as she grew she could choose to continue to use the short version or change to the long, and the same with Theodore/Teddy - he could be known as Theo when he got a bit older.

Please be as honest as you like! Would also appreciate suggestions of other names that go with our surname.

Other names we like are

Rory
Flynn
Louie

I don't think Ted Baird sounds much better. A 2 syllable name works best.

StarUtopia · 03/01/2020 15:17

Kit Baird? Seriously? Like kit board?! no.

I agree with whoever suggested Alexander.

You need a longer first name. Traditional. Lawrence is nice too.

Helpmechoose321 · 03/01/2020 16:47

@StarUtopia what is a kit board? Board and Baird are also completely different sounds.

Anyway we’ve decided not to use Teddy as a nickname, if we decide to go ahead with Theodore

What about Ruaridh? Nicer than Rory imo

Wintersun13 · 08/02/2020 19:59

Somewhat belatedly - how about Thaddeus ? You can nickname him Tad or Thad. Close to Ted but without the teasing risk ?

Whatsyourflava · 08/02/2020 20:06

Have you picked a name or got a shortlist? @Helpmechoose321

I actually think Teddy Baird is a really cool name and I’m not ashamed to say it 🙋‍♀️

Getoffmylilo · 08/02/2020 20:23

I love Teddy Baird too - it's stuck in my head now.

I think Theo sounds lovely. Current other faves all begin with R (for Random)

Rory
Rufus
Rhodri

Chocolatecake12 · 08/02/2020 20:31

How about Edward? Eddie as a nn

Or
Joseph nn Joe
Stanley nn stan
Daniel nn Dan or Danny
Robert nn Robbie
Benjamin nn ben or benji

Rachelhaydenberk1 · 08/02/2020 21:44

Yeah there would be an issue with Teddy. Theo is stunning but I saw you dont like that.

I like Louis with Louie for short, Rory, Kit (Christopher as a full name?) or Flynn! You have beautiful taste. I thought Teddy was cute also but your last name is much to similar to Bear so unfortunately I think that is out.

wellyjin · 09/02/2020 04:22

Have you thought about Chris? Underused these days. Could partner with Lee as the middle name.

YouSetTheTone · 09/02/2020 09:01

I feel your pain as I really liked Edward with Teddy as nn but it didn’t work with our surname either. I also really liked Flynn and I have a Rory now! I love Rory, it suits him perfectly and people often say how much they like his name.

I think Flynn Baird sounds fab!

emilybrontescorsett · 09/02/2020 13:30

Teddy Baird does sound like Teddy Bear.
I would be wary of using Theodore if you don't like Theo as he will get called Theo.

DearGod1 · 10/02/2020 23:50

Thaddeus nn Thady?

jakeyboy1 · 10/02/2020 23:55

Nicknames don't always pan out as you expect either... not actual names but let's say I had an Isabel and planned to call her Issy and we ended up with something totally different!

Mumma4262 · 11/02/2020 07:47

I know someone with the surname Baird who called their son Teddy (just Teddy not short for Theodore or anything).

No offence OP but I always wondered what they were thinking!

joystir59 · 11/02/2020 07:48

Any of those three names are much better than effing Teddy

GiGi18 · 11/02/2020 10:41

I had a similar issue. My favourite girls name was Minnie but with our surname it sounded like Minnie Mouse so couldn't go for it. Absolutely gutted when it's your favourite name. Hope you find something you like just as much, there will be a name out there! X
