I’m expecting a baby girl soon and quite like the name Gertrude. The only problem is that I can’t find a middle name that suits it. Please help!

Sorry but Gert-Rude. Dirty Gertie. It's not a kind name to give to a child.

But how come threads about Bertie or Rudy get such positive responses on here? Much more obvious teasing potential!

I like Gertrude and think it's a refreshing change from all the cutesy Evies, Ellies and Poppies.

Gertrude Joy
Gertrude Clara
Gertrude Rose

I love Gertrude! It's my gaming name.
And it's not always harsh. The local dialect where I live pronounces it Her- truud- a. That very soft.
However, I would be more inclined to use it as a middle name. I just don't think it will go down to well in the UK.

lottiegarbanzo · 02/12/2019 07:59

Because there's no well-known comic character called 'Dirty Bertie from number 30', perhaps? 'Dirty Gertie' is very well-established in people's minds.

Katfood · 02/12/2019 08:02

So why would parents name their child Bertie?

lottiegarbanzo · 02/12/2019 08:02

Oh right, it was from Basil Brush. Boom boom!

lottiegarbanzo · 02/12/2019 08:04

Why wouldn't they name them Bertie (short for Robert)? It's cute and has no obvious negative associations.

Anne

RiddleyW · 02/12/2019 08:05

I hope you can afford to send her to private school with Betty and Wilfred

My DS has a Wilfred and a Betty in his class! Not private school though. I think you may be mistaken if you think any community that doesn’t enjoy bullying people is posh.

Gertrude is bloody awful. I bet all the people who are saying it's a lovely name have DDs named Olivia or Emily.

Janderson · 02/12/2019 08:25

Gertrude is a fantastic name. If I had had another girl, she would have been Gertie.

Lots of good middle name suggestions here.

Janderson · 02/12/2019 08:26

That's a nasty little comment, user. (and no, I don't have DDs named Olivia or Emily, or indeed anything in the top 100 girls' names).

GagaBinks · 02/12/2019 08:39

Can't believe OP has asked for help with a middle name and yet so many people think it's their right to comment on how they hate the first name. Ridiculous and rude.

Katfood · 02/12/2019 08:49

* I* bet all the people who are saying it's a lovely name have DDs named Olivia or Emily.

No, I don't. Nor any name in the top 100! I personally find Olivia and Emily quite boring and overused.

RickOShay · 02/12/2019 09:16

My dd is not Olivia. I do like Gertie, but I’m not sure about Gertrude. But actually it’s growing on me. Not sure that my opinion is all that important though Grin
The name that got away for me is Gloria. Magnificent name.

RiddleyW · 02/12/2019 09:18

I love the name Gloria! DH wasn’t keen then we had a boy anyway.

onceuponarocketship · 02/12/2019 09:20

Yep, south-west Gertrude = gert rude, which means very rude.

VisionQuest · 02/12/2019 09:21

Gertrude Fanny Grin

Ah that's brilliant.

FoamingAtTheUterus · 02/12/2019 09:33

I remember being at school and all the girls in my class had patent, leather shoes with a cross bar that could be moved turning the shoes into pumps.

But not me, I had leather, clumpy things with a T bar.........Gertrude is the name equivalent of my clumpy T bars. Honestly, don't do it !

misspiggy19 · 02/12/2019 09:34

Gertrude is an ugly name. Harsh and hard sounding.

RickOShay · 02/12/2019 09:35

Grin @RiddleyW
We will just have to get more pets

burritofan · 02/12/2019 09:58

Gertrude is fucking BRILLIANT, I'm stealing it for the shortlist for potential future DC2

I think it would go wonderfully with something very plain Jane and dull in the middle to balance out the strength of it, such as Sarah, Rachel, Emma or, indeed, Jane.

Or something floral: Fleur, Violet, Posy or Rose.

PushkinTheCat · 02/12/2019 10:06

I think you can get away with a longer middle name than some people have suggested, but it probably needs to be a fairly different “type” of name to Gertrude. How about:

Gertrude Millicent (I have no idea why but this is the first name that popped into my head!)

Gertrude Alexandra
Gertrude Madeleine
Gertrude Louisa
Gertrude Charlotte
Gertrude Eleanor

PushkinTheCat · 02/12/2019 10:06

I like the previous suggestions of Gertrude Violet and Gertrude Rachel too!

Singlenotsingle · 02/12/2019 10:07

Gertrude? Shock OMG!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 02/12/2019 10:20

Trudie yes but Gertrude is a fugly name
