I’m expecting a baby girl soon and quite like the name Gertrude. The only problem is that I can’t find a middle name that suits it. Please help!

Gertrude.
Gertie.
Gert.

Sorry but I can't see anything nice about this name. Please think of another one.

Something classic but short that your dd could use instead of her first name if she didn’t like it.

Sorry but Gert-Rude. Dirty Gertie. It's not a kind name to give to a child.

So, something nice for a middle name, that she can use instead.

I don’t think I’d like it if my parents had called me Gertrude. They might, but I wouldn’t like to live with it. Is there any reason for it, or is it a joke name?

Yep, •Lottie* I instantly thought ‘Dirty Gertie from number 30...’

Yes, I don't even know where that comes from but it's powerfully embedded in my brain. Some horrible 70s comedian I expect.

I forgot how much I love the name Wallace!

I’m genuinely shocked people like the name Gertrude. Is it the new Hebe of mn Confused

Gertrude is lovely and just right for a comeback in the same way Ada and Agatha have. It has that antiquated fairy dust sort of feel, like Gretal, Prunella, Aurora, Love it!

I think a slightly frilly softer middle name, would complement it better than a short one.

Gertrude Ariadne
Gertrude Primrose
Gertrude Demelza
Gertrude Delilah
Gertrude Evelina
Gertrude Maria
Gertrude Celine
Gertrude Vivienne
Gertrude Ophelia
Gertrude Pollyanna

I like it but would avoid any floral middle names as it makes it sound a bit... bovine... sorry.

Anna was a lovely suggestion.

I hope you can afford to send her to private school with Betty and Wilfred or she'll probably be laughed at. Kids are not as nice as we'd like them to be

Neither are adults apparently...

Listen, name your daughter what you love. I think Trudie is cute AF and I nobody will bat an eye with all the Betsey, Maud, Ethel and Mabels around!

And Marie is a lovely middle name (may be biased...)

I think you need to soften it out as it's a bit harsh sounding.

How about Gertrude Fanny.

Gertrude?
Please think about this..

@Anotherthink you cannot call a child fanny in this day and age. The poor child will be the laughing stock of the school. Teenagers are rough without calling you child a common nickname for a vagina!

Gertrude was my name in our German lessons
I hated it. Guttural, ugly sound. Please don't land it on your little girl
Trudy , as a name in it's own right, is much nicer

Trudy is lovely, not Gertrude

I was named after the nurse who delivered me. Whenever I tell people that story, I always end by saying " And I'm so glad that the nurse had a nice name ! Imagine if she'd been called something like Gertrude !"

So no....please not Gertrude. It's ugly and harsh.

I am named after my bloody brilliant grandmother (Gertrude Verity). I am Verity Violet Gertrude XXXX. I so love my name and am so proud of her role (minor suffaragettte) and of the fact that it is a family name plus an oddity as we are many generations of 'council house' people.

It's very rare that I would ever advise against a 'traditional' name, but Gertrude, no, just no. You can't do that to your daughter. Trudy is just about acceptable, but even that is not particularly nice.

I'm so sorry but when I hear Gertrude I think of a an old battle axe or a Ms Trunchbull like woman.

Trudy is cute.... But Gertrude is like others have said, very harsh x

In some SW idiom, 'gert' means great / a lot / very, so 'gert rude' = really rude.

There is a set of cute and lovely Edwardian names that have become fashionable in the 'granny chic' revivival. There is also a set of ugly names of the era that hasn't. Gertrude is one of those.

Would you think about it as a middle name maybe?
I always try to imagine myself with having a name. Would you like to be Gertrude?
