Plum’s sister!

Help please! We chose a very unusual name for our first daughter (Plum Elizabeth) and now we’re stuck on what to name her sister. Our current list feels a bit pedestrian in comparison, does it matter?

We like:

Alice
Flora
Gaia
Cecily
Beatrix
Sylvie
Merryn
Iris (actually, I’ve always loved Isis, but it’s obviously unusable now)

Flora - margarine
Gaia - no
Cecily - yes
Beatrix - I prefer Beatrice
Sylvie - no
Merryn - no
Iris - yes

Also...

Perdita works well with Plum.

DontLettuceBrexitLettuceRomain · 17/11/2019 21:39

Why are so few people questioning the choice of PLUM?!

Angie6868 · 17/11/2019 21:43

I guess that so few people are questioning the choice of Plum because it's already a done deal, not a suggestion

TatianaLarina · 17/11/2019 21:44

Because it’s a pretty name and it’s already done.

Reminds me of Plum Sykes.

Marcipex · 17/11/2019 21:45

Amber

Scarlett

EmmaC78 · 17/11/2019 21:46

Don'tLettuce I think lots of people have questioned it. It is very unusual and I genuinely am wondering what reaction the name gets in real life.

mummabubs · 17/11/2019 21:47

Can't think of any helpful suggestions but just to say we'll be in a similar position-chose an unusual name for DS (only 14 of him in the UK with the same name tjay year) and definitely feel the odd pressure a second time around to have a name that's also not as mainstream but perhaps not as rare! Good luck!

Loveday
Sage
Lark

Cassia. Hebe. Tamsin. Merryn is the only one I like from your list.

tiggertogger · 17/11/2019 21:51

Plum is so cruel.

HazeyJaney · 17/11/2019 21:54

Thank you for all the jokes Confused Plum Sykes is where we first heard the name as an actual name, we actually started calling her that during pregnancy and it just kind of stuck, especially once we discovered it’s actually used, albeit not often. We didn’t deliberately set out to name her anything “quirky” (our other choices were things like Florence, Alice, Harriet, Phoebe) but she suits it, we like it, and it’s surprisingly uncontroversial in real life. Everyone can say and spell it, and she has a very classic middle name she can always use if she hates it.

ANYWAY, for this one I’m really really liking Sorrel now! Flora, Beatrix and Sylvie I think are our other favourites. I love Tess but my husband isn’t so keen. We really don’t want anything matchy like Plum and Posy or Plum and Clementine, cute though those names are.

I think Plum is a fab name (misses point of thread)

user1493494961 · 17/11/2019 21:56

To a pp, I somehow don't think Op will worry that Flora is a brand of margarine.

NameChangedNoImagination · 17/11/2019 22:00

People making jokes about their first child's name and giving 'funny' suggestions for the next one wouldnt dare do so in real life. I find it very poor taste and extremely rude.

FizzyGreenWater · 17/11/2019 22:03

I like Sorrel but it's not as nice as your other ones - all of which have that slightly eccentric storybook quality too. Beatrix is probably my fave.

Plum and Bea is lovely.

TatianaLarina · 17/11/2019 22:04

Don’t like Sorrel - it sounds like a wet dog.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 17/11/2019 22:07

When DD, DH or I do something daft, we call each other a plum...

I don’t really like Sorrel. Makes me think of a cleaning product. Of your narrowed down choices, I’d go with Flora but only if pushed to choose.

Rosehassometoes · 17/11/2019 22:09

Laurel?
Clemency
Wren
Eliza
Adela

user1493494961 · 17/11/2019 22:09

Prefer Flora to Sorrel (Plum Sykes name is Victoria).

DontCallMeShitley · 17/11/2019 22:20

Fruit Salad

Peanutbutteryogurt · 17/11/2019 22:22

I think it would be very unfair to call one child Plum then give another child a normal name.

campion · 17/11/2019 22:25

Apple. Obviously.
PG Wodehouse was known as Plum, mainly because he couldn't say Pelham as a small child. So unisex too.

TheDIsiilusionedAnarchist · 17/11/2019 22:27

I like Plum, I started a thread about it years ago after a miscarriage and it was roundly slated along with my other choice Boudicca (Boo) how about Boudicca?

My actual daughters are called Rumer and Marilla if either of those take your fancy and we also liked Eris, Wren and Ottilie, Calypso and Cassiopeia. I agree with others that I’d go for something slightly odd with Plum. Maybe Juno if you like Isis or Dido.

Coco

Stella
Pearl
Irene
