Zelda or Holly?

I’m having trouble deciding between Zelda or Holly. Will be a Christmas baby. Her middle name is likely to be Cariad.

Would appreciate your honest thoughts! Thanks Smile

I like both!

Think Zelda has the edge. Zelda Cariad just sounds like you tried to find the weirdest name possible though! - so not sure.

Think the Cariad thing is spoiling it tbh. It's not really a name. In Welsh it's like calling her Sweetheart or Darling and it does sound odd. Especially when there are so many nice Welsh names.

If Zelda, how about Zara?

If Holly, how about Hebe?

Frith2013 · 08/11/2019 18:35

Holly.

Prisoner of Zelda to me.

Frith2013 · 08/11/2019 18:36

How about Zillah, Zena or Zara?

Cariad also makes no sense as a name.

TheVanguardSix · 08/11/2019 18:42

Zelda! I looove that name. It's one I would consider if I'd had a DD2, which I won't. My friend's DD is Zelda. Her nickname is Zee.

Neither name will ever date. That was a silly comment above, saying Zelda would date. Not at all. As I said, neither name. But Zelda is just too cool. I love it.

Binkybix · 09/11/2019 22:34

I know a Zelda. Love it!

Strangely I also knew a Cariad growing up. Quite like that too. No one blinked an eye at it.

mathanxiety · 10/11/2019 01:08

It's Prisoner of Zenda, not Zelda.

mathanxiety · 10/11/2019 01:09

Cariad is a Welsh name.

Similar to Alannah in meaning.

Mitsouko67 · 10/11/2019 01:23

I love Holly. So pretty and a little retro too. Quite 50s.

Zelda is a gamble. She will need to be very glamorous to carry it off.

VenusClapTrap · 10/11/2019 08:49

Zelda is not good. Terror Hawks and computer game.

Holly is nice.

habipprtyh · 10/11/2019 09:00

'The legend of Zelda' - absolutely no to Zelda

Holly is nice.

Any others on the list?

Sparklysunflowers · 10/11/2019 09:33

I love Zelda! Beautiful and feminine and very memorable.

Holly is so dull in comparison.

RockinHippy · 10/11/2019 10:16

Zelda,

I once know a wonderful elderly lady named Zelda, she is the only one I have ever known

Rosere · 10/11/2019 10:27

I'm a Christmas baby. I'll never fathom why I wasn't a Holly or a Noelle or a Nicola😂. Holly's lovely. Or Mary. Your middle name is fantastic. Love it.

Moominfan · 10/11/2019 10:34

Zelda!

snidgetowl · 10/11/2019 14:19

I thought Cariad Lloyd was English? Cariad isn't a Welsh name, it's a term of endearment that means "love". The only people I've seen use it are English people living in Wales who think they are choosing a Welsh "name" but in actual fact is just a Welsh word.

FizzyGreenWater · 10/11/2019 14:24

Cariad is just the Welsh word for love, and exactly as in English it's used as a term of endearment too ('All right, love?') so it is literally like calling your child Zelda Love. Sp quite weird, and not at all the same as e.g. saying the name Cara basically means love. Cariad isn't a name.

mathanxiety · 10/11/2019 20:02

How is it weird though?

FizzyGreenWater · 11/11/2019 09:20

If you're a Welsh speaker then it just does sound weird, in exactly the same way that if someone came up to you and said 'Hi! My name is Love, Love Robertson' or something similar, you'd think it was quite weird. Not least because you would then immediately descend into the ridiculousness of having to call them 'love' every time you used their name, a la the Blackadder 'Hello, Darling' situation Grin

HepzibahGreen · 11/11/2019 09:26

Zelda Carys
Zelda Ceridwen?
Definitely not Holly.

saywhatwhatnow · 11/11/2019 13:29

Definitely Zelda! Holly is very 'safe'. I also like Cariad as a first name.
