Not really important backstory:
We have visited my DH's family and friends and had a conversation about baby names.
She made it known that she would prefer an English or 'at least' German name. But the LO will have an Italian surname and pairing that with an 'obviously' English first name sounds as if we're trying to name a gangster / character for a Hollywood movie gangster imo. (not trying to offend anyone.)

her comments sort of spoiled our names, I guess. (But we also don't want to exclude her... It just makes me sad if I'm being honest..)

Luisa and Carla are lovely.
I don't be like any of the others.

tisonlymeagain · 12/10/2019 15:40

I'm afraid I don't really like any but it's personal choice, go with what you like, it's not her baby!

mapleleafshiba · 12/10/2019 15:51

Love Luisa, Emmanuel and Anton

Gloria is pretty but reminds me of the hippo in Madagascar - sorry!

CravingCheese · 12/10/2019 16:05

@tisonlymeagain
Yes sure. But I talk about baby names with my parents (mainly my mother). I feel bad about excluding her. Or not letting DH talk about this with his mother....

And I don't think that I want us to give the LO a name that she would not even use.

I think your names are great. All very strong. I’m least keen on Doris. It has a very dowdy image to me but maybe time for a revival. Leona doesn’t really do it for me either. I love Basil but suspect I’ll be in a minority.

Lavenderblues · 12/10/2019 16:42

I like Carla and Anton.

How about Antonia or Quentin?

CravingCheese · 12/10/2019 17:09

@daisypond I'm glad you think so. that's exactly what I wanted. I was worried about Debora sounding weak and wishy washy tbh...

Antonia is nice. Not a fan of Quentin tbh.

Love Carla.

I worked with a Leandro, he was lovely, giant bloke from Brazil!

What about Ausra? I worked with a lovely polish lady called Ausra.
Or Aurelian?

MissHenty · 12/10/2019 18:35

Juno is a great name

user1493494961 · 12/10/2019 18:39

Luisa is nice, Emmanuel is OK, dislike the others.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 12/10/2019 18:43

I really like Leona and luisa, but unfortunately in the UK Luisa will be continually pronounced as "Louisa".

MrsBertBibby · 12/10/2019 18:51

Very much like Luisa, Leta and Leona.

Emil from the boys. I adore Raul but I fear it getting butchered in an English accent.

Please not Basil, Leandro or Debora.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 12/10/2019 19:02

Carla is gorgeous. Luisa is nice, but I suspect you'd be setti your DD up for a lifetime of correcting spelling

I like Antonio. Luca is also lovely.

CravingCheese · 12/10/2019 19:15

really like Leona and luisa, but unfortunately in the UK Luisa will be continually pronounced as "Louisa".

How would you pronounce those two?

Most of the family that DH has a close relationship with is from the UK. So yes, them being able to pronounce the name is super important.

I have a brother called Luca... Francesca is nice. Thanks :)!

Please not Basil, Leandro or Debora.
Do you just not like them or is there some actual problem we missed?

bridgetreilly · 12/10/2019 19:16

I like Emil and Emmanuel. Don't mind Leandro but don't love it.

For the girls, I love Gloria and quite like Luisa and Delfina. Dora or Carla would be my next best choices.

17caterpillars1mouse · 12/10/2019 19:48

I love Gloria and Gloriana even more so

Lilytheblue · 12/10/2019 20:25

Raul reminds me of Raul Moat

Frith2013 · 12/10/2019 20:45

Raul - I’m not a fan. Reminds me of Raul Moat.
Anton (Antonio/Antonin? ) - ok
Emil - ok
Basil - really dislike
Emmanuel - too religious for me, but nice sound to it.
Leandro - no. Sounds like generic Spanish waiter in a sitcom.

Gloria - ok
Delfina - prefer Delphine
Debora - dull
Carla (I had a grand aunt named Carla) - ok
Dora - no
Luisa - ok
Leta - don’t like this one
Leona (I just find it lovely tbh...) - I prefer Leonie
Juno - no. Makes me think of do you know.

CravingCheese · 13/10/2019 09:22

Makes me think of do you know.
I'm sorry, but what am I supposed to know?

I googled Raoul Moat (he apparently spelled his name with an o)... He doesn't seem like an especially 'extreme' or famous criminal. Or his he one of those that managed to embed himself in the 'national memory'? Neither mine nor my DH's surname sounds anything like Moat btw.

AverageMummy · 13/10/2019 09:59

Raul - ok
Anton (Antonio/Antonin? ) don’t like
Emil - don’t like
Basil - just think Basil Faulty sorry
Emmanuel - ok....could grow on me
Leandro - this is cool, could be known as Leo

Gloria - dislike
Delfina - dislike
Debora - very dated
Carla (I had a grand aunt named Carla) - prefer Clara or Cora but it’s ok
Dora - the explorer.....
Luisa - love this - stand out name
Leta - never heard of this not sure how it’s said
Leona (I just find it lovely tbh...) I like this but my husband said it sounded too much like laundry softener
Juno - really quirky and cool

Sorry I haven’t been more positive

AverageMummy · 13/10/2019 10:00

Re the above comment - the poster means Juno sounds like when people mumble ‘do you know’ / ‘d’you know?’

CravingCheese · 13/10/2019 16:55

@AverageMummy

Thanks for the explanation!
No need to be sorry. And you haven't been 'not-positive' imo. :)

Raul - I agree I'm afraid it made me think of Raoul Moat. Anyway, I don't really like it, it makes me think of the sound wolves make when they howl for some reason!
Anton (Antonio/Antonin? ) - yes all three are lovely
Emil - also beautiful
Basil - this is a bit of a joke name to me. For many brits it will remind them immediately of fawlty towers which isn't terrible but it's just not the strongest name
Emmanuel - lovely
Leandro - really nice as well

Gloria - bit dated?
Delfina - very pretty
Debora - alright, bit dated but could be nice
Carla (I had a grand aunt named Carla) - nice
Dora - sweet name
Luisa - okay
Leta - quite like it, unusual
Leona (I just find it lovely tbh...) - lovely
Juno - also lovely

Lots of great options there OP
