Leandro and Luisa get my vote! But in all honesty your MIL is going to adore your little baby, her grandchild, no matter what name you give it so I really would pick the name you and your OH love.

Luisa btw could probably be pronounced

Loo ee za (Louisa) that was my first reading of it OR
Loo isa (the I like in igloo rather than an ee sound) both are good imo!

Good luck OP!

I like Debora, Luisa, Leona, Juno, Francesca - all great names I think! I really particularly like Debora/h (I guess I prefer the h spelling just because I'm used to it but if Debora is an Italian spelling it would work), Juno and Francesca.
I particularly dislike Gloria (seems really dated and over-the-top) and Dora.
I really like Raul, and don't mind Anton and Leandro. I prefer Anton over Antonio etc. Emil is okay, but I really dislike Basil - too dated and negative conotations.

DramaAlpaca · 14/10/2019 01:19

I only like Luisa & Leona. And maybe Juno, though I'd never use it myself.

I'm sorry, it's rare that I can't find something positive to say about a list of names, but I don't share your taste in boys' names at all.

Next time, don't discuss names with your MIL. Names are none of her business until you announce what your child is called.

CravingCheese · 15/10/2019 09:22

Thank you so much for your lovely (and presumably honest) comments.
One of the names that seems to be getting quite a lot of positive feedback is the one mil would be 'ashamed' to use... (And might therefore 'need' to call her grandchild by the middle name...)

So that's good to know, I guess. Thanks :)!!

(Francesca is now on our list, btw. So yes, thanks again!)

Carlotta?

It's really nice, thanks. But I'm not sure I like the (possible) nn Lotti tbh...

Sounds like your dh needs to nip this in the bud- a light hearted but clear remark about how it’s your baby you’re giving birth to so you have 100% choice over the name. In law issues can only be exaggerated after children are born so be nice but honest: your baby, your name choice. She doesn’t have the right to call him/her by their middle name either as that won’t be their name! Only answer really is to not discuss your serious names with anyone other than your dh before you a announce the baby after birth.
Again, not my choice of names but I don’t have an Italian background- I think they’re all fine!
Good luck!

Ihateedmundelephant · 16/10/2019 18:32

Juno, Leona and Luisa are lovely. Quite like Emil too!

CravingCheese · 20/10/2019 12:30

Thank you for your response. (and sorry for taking such a long time to answer)

My DH didn't really get to have a relationship with his father but is pretty close to his mother. I myself am very close to mine and I wouldn't want to give DH the feeling like... Idk, I'm prioritising my family.
But yeah, you're right. These comments really were inappropriate.

Thanks, elephant. I like Emil as well.:)

I googled Raoul Moat (he apparently spelled his name with an o)... He doesn't seem like an especially 'extreme' or famous criminal. Or his he one of those that managed to embed himself in the 'national memory'?

He lured 2 female police officers to his home address and brutally murdered them I would consider that "extreme". Before that he had murdered and GBH'd others and was on the run.

MrsH497 · 20/10/2019 13:10

Out of your list I like Carla (what about Clara??) and Leandro. Also quite like Dora although everyone will associate with Dora with explora I fear! Leona is pretty

CravingCheese · 20/10/2019 13:14

''He lured 2 female police officers to his home address and brutally murdered them I would consider that "extreme". Before that he had murdered and GBH'd others and was on the run.''

That somehow wasn't in the summary of his capture that popped up when I googled him. It said that he killed a person, injured two and then killed himself /his death was ruled a suicide..?

Which seemed bad but (as I said) not super extreme in the grand scheme of things....
I'll have to google him more carefully. thank you.

Apologies wrong one he shot PC David Rathband in the face. My mistake got the wrong person

Leopardprintboots · 20/10/2019 14:00

Yeh think everyone’s heard of Raoul Moat. Would never ever use that horrible name. Same with Maxine (Car). Unusable now

Lisajg23 · 20/10/2019 16:36

I think Leona and Emil are nice.

Or what about Emilio?
I think that's a lovely name x

honeybunlatte · 20/10/2019 21:04

He shot and killed his ex girlfriend, her new boyfriend, hunted down a police man and shot him too, with a sawn off shotgun two days after being released from prison. Then he went on the run for 7 days. Then finally during a 6 hour stand off with police he killed himself. It was the largest man hunt in British history (even Ray Mears got involved 😆)
You don't consider this extreme??!

JoanieCash · 20/10/2019 21:26

Maria

I mean. I think it's really bad, obviously. But killed 1 and harmed two doesn't seem like a super infamous criminal, no...? It's not like we're thinking about naming the child Pablo Escobar! No idea who they Ray Mears person is tbh.... But I seem to have been mistaken. Seems like he is super infamous in the UK(?).

@MrsH497
Which is of course really bad as well. One should not shoot people in the face...

Emilio is super super nice but maybe a bit too Italian for us? Especially with the surname? Idk.
I just don't want the LO to end up with an 'Al Capone' name..

CravingCheese · 20/10/2019 21:35

JoanieCash

My maternal and DH's paternal grandmothers are both called Maria...

I also have an aunt called Mariella... 😅
I love the name Maria but it's a bit 'done' imo?
DH did however propose Marina... (I said no).

I think ofRaoul Dufy the famous artist, not the murderer. Also know a Raoul and have never made the connection to that horrible story, I don’t think everyone would. How about Luca as another European boys name? I love the name Leona, taught a complete star called Leona and been fond of name since.

Cyberworrier · 20/10/2019 21:50

What about Marita?
