Trying not to name them after Harry potter...

Livelikejackandsally · 07/10/2019 20:30

Names I reaally love are names like Draco, Narcissa, Hermione
But I really couldnt handle the constant Harry potter reference. So if any one knows any names with that sort of vibe I'd love to hear suggestions!

I also really like Emmeline, Ambrose, Alaric, Nikou, Astrid, Amycus

But they're either just not quite right, or my DH won't agree with me

I'm really fussy and the names I like no one else seems to
Any help?

You could look at star names? Sirius, Bellatrix, Draco etc are all stars or constellations. Perhaps you could use something like Auriga, Caruna, Cassiopeia, Alsephina, etc.

I dont know any names like this myself but you could start with wikipedia or the library and look at names from Latin classics or greek mythology. My boss studied classics at a top university and had wonderful names stored in his head from literature. Which might have been where J K Rowling got her inspiration from! Or astrology as a PP suggested.... good luck. Smile

Love Atticus - but an old boyfriend named his child that so I feel it's weird

I think most of the nice star names are in HP unfortunately, I like some of the others you named too, but they're all in the series.

The the pp saying Astrid - that's my first choice but my DH has vetoed!

Salem!! I love this but can't help but think everyone will always comment about the town or the cat! Same issue with Caspar/kasper and the similarly spelled ghost..

A few of the ones mentioned that I like we have friends who have just named their DC these names and DH would never go for a repeat sadly

Of the others mentioned, i really like Enzo, tybalt, Esther, atlas, Blythe, Acadia, and Matilda

I think arwen may be my favourite girls name (after Astrid) so far.

I love Artemis and Hector.

Astarte
Hecate
Anana

reeny19 · 09/10/2019 11:06

Arwen is lovely but instead of HP references you’d just end up with Lord of the Rings references instead? Never heard it used outside of LOTR. Astrid is lovely, can you really not twist his arm on that one? 😂

Livelikejackandsally · 09/10/2019 19:24

No!! I haven't seen LOTR!! Blush
I wouldn't have known

Honestly he's absolutely vetoed it and I don't know why, some of the names he suggests honestly have me thinking about dumping him, and being offended all at once because his taste is clearly horrific.

There are some great names in the suggestions. They're better than your own names!

Victor, Jago, and Lyra, Gaia

@shawnaander 's list is like your taste but better Her list is the evolution of your taste Smile
Hope that doesn't sound too awful. But Draco sounds terrible. Like Dark and Drain fluid. And Narcissa ??? I can see where you're going though, or where you want to go with it. But it's losing its otherworldliness.

Cosmo was suggested as well, love that.
Saw Iseult in there too. Cosmo and Iseult two that would fit the slightly elusive here on earth vibe.

Livelikejackandsally · 10/10/2019 18:32

Haha slightly harsh rue but I know what you're saying, I do like some of the names here

I'm still not quite sure I've found the one you know, but this has given me a great starting point and some ideas of places to look, and more examples of the styles I like.

I still really like the ones I mentioned last time, Iseult is lovely too and ygraine isn't one I had heard of before but Im pretty keen on that one

Nimue us lovely too - would you pronounce it neem-you or nihm - you ...or non of the above

Can't believe arwen is off LOTR

Sorry, I feel like I’ve ruined Arwen for you 😂 but you need to know. The character played by Liv Tyler. I think Tolkien May have even invented the name in the first place? Not sure.

I am loving the suggestions in this thread though, think I’ll end up taking some suggestions from here, even though I can barely fathom having another baby just yet! 😂

RueCambon · 10/10/2019 19:41

Sorry to be harsh, I only bothered to post because your taste in names is interesting and you are either going to get it 😘⭐ or it is going to be "sorry whaat."

For what it's worth, i think Arwen is beautiful. I knew one once. She'd be about 45 or 46 I think, as a source of inspiration, LOTR stands the test of time. I love Olwen as well.

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/10/2019 21:05

there is also Anwen?

Livelikejackandsally · 10/10/2019 21:28

Oh I did need to know!!
Sometimes you hear baby names and think omg why did no one tell them

Rue I LOVE Olwen
Maybe that's a way around it!
