Trying not to name them after Harry potter...

Livelikejackandsally · 07/10/2019 20:30

Names I reaally love are names like Draco, Narcissa, Hermione
But I really couldnt handle the constant Harry potter reference. So if any one knows any names with that sort of vibe I'd love to hear suggestions!

I also really like Emmeline, Ambrose, Alaric, Nikou, Astrid, Amycus

But they're either just not quite right, or my DH won't agree with me

I'm really fussy and the names I like no one else seems to
Any help?

I love Arwen too. Such a pretty sound.

madeyemoodysmum · 10/10/2019 21:35

Hero is fab for a girl. So romantic

BertieBotts · 10/10/2019 21:37

:o I had similar thoughts about DH's taste in names. He started passing on names MIL suggested as well and I wanted to kill him. She suggested Barry Hmm FFS

Idris
Adelheid (Ah-del-hide) / Heidi
Seren
Leonidas
Tamsin
Emil
Lars
Aelfraed (Elfrid = less Fed up spelling)
Elfie (girl)
Orin
Alexander
Sofie

That was my shortlist - I also have Astrid on it :)

Nimue is lovely.

It's pronounced Nim - way.

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/10/2019 21:43

OP sounds like maybe more celtic names are fitting the bill?

So maybe have a look at some older Welsh/Irish/Scottish names?

Eithne
Greer
Lorna
Vaila
Alma

Taliesan
Egan
Gwern

madeyemoodysmum · 10/10/2019 21:45

Nimue. Also a lovely name. I was I wasn’t nearly 50. I want a new navy to name Grin. Maybe get another cat 🐈

Livelikejackandsally · 10/10/2019 21:56

@WaxOnFeckOff this is why I came to Mumsnet! I knew someone would have this great knowledge and tell me all the directions I should be looking in
Vaila is gorgeous and another one I'd not heard before

@madeyemoodysmum you could get a dog or a cat! ...or speak to @BertieBotts MIL and try talk her round from Barry...

Vaila is a Scottish Island, place names are a great stopping ground for names. DS1 was nearly Blaven after the mountain on Skye. DS2 was nearly Cairn as we were sticking pins in a map and kept on hitting the Cairn's on the top of mountains.

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 10/10/2019 22:11

I know a young arwen. Have a look at some Welsh names or Shakespeare.

gnushoes · 11/10/2019 00:49

Just bear in mind that your daughter has to live with it through school and work, spelling it for people. Suppose she doesn't look ethereal and otherworldly? Can you see yourself yelling many of these names in a soft play or to a stroppy teen? Out of interest, what's your DH suggesting?

Livelikejackandsally · 11/10/2019 01:22

@gnushoes literally nothing. Occasionally he suggests a name. I ask him if he can see himself calling that out to our child.
He says no. Back to sq one

I don't think some of the ones I like best are too much to live up to, arwen etc
I think a kid will grow into their name generally anyway

It's rare you meet an adult and think they don't suit their name at all.

I wouldn't go for Lyra, not with the new book and the BBC adaptation of Northern Lights happening while you're pregnant. How about...

Morven
Miranda

Marcus
Murtagh

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 11/10/2019 01:41

I'm obviously keen on the M names tonight!

StVincent · 11/10/2019 02:09

A lot of the ones you like sound quite Breton: www.britishbabynames.com/blog/2011/09/breton-names.html

Bretons I know are called Gwendall, Lea, Yoan.

RainbowMum11 · 11/10/2019 02:22

Have you looked at Ancient Greek & Latin names? That's where a lot of the HP names came from so you might find something you like?

notangelinajolie · 11/10/2019 02:28

Them? How many have you got to name?

I have one name for you.

Evangeline

Arwen and Orwen are fab, loving reading this post so many unusual names. My OH genuinely suggested and still likes "Linda", made me want to weep. I have a wonderful step mum Linda and know others who are just as lovely but seriously baby Linda... its up there with Barry surely 😂😂😂

The joke will be by the time our kids are having kids Linda could well be a "beautiful" choice again!!

Keep us posted OP with whatever you and OH decide, good luck!

MaidenMotherCrone · 11/10/2019 05:08

Arwen is lovely as is Arwyn for a boy. They are Welsh and mean 'fair'.

GrumpiestCat · 11/10/2019 07:06

Electra or Petra

Livelikejackandsally · 11/10/2019 18:50

@notangelinajolie just the one but we don't know the sex so 'them' is easier for now.

OP posts:
DeathMetalMum · 11/10/2019 18:53

Arianna.

Livelikejackandsally · 12/10/2019 10:21

Linda is up there with Barry Blush
