Is this really horrendous?

Lennon, nn Lennie for baby girl. I read a book a while back and there was a girl in there called Lennon and it’s stuck with me since.
I think Lennie is a cute and pretty nn too. I typically like slightly more unisex names.
OH likes it too. I was pretty much decided on it but decided last night to do a which MN search on the name just to see the general opinion / check for any issues in it etc. Bad idea. The pinnacle was a recent thread on Lennyn... didn’t go well.

So is Lennon / Lennie that bad? It would be Lennon Rose probably.

I love it. Lots of significant people are very dysfunctional. Doesn't mean their contribution wasn't important

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 21/09/2019 15:43

Elena with Leni as a nickname works.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/09/2019 15:48

I love Lennon for a boy, but Not for a girl.
I wouldn’t go as far as to say “Its horrendous, though

PrincessHoneysuckle · 21/09/2019 15:55

Lennie as a full name but not lennon

WhatTiggersDoBest · 21/09/2019 15:55

Lenina (main character out of Brave New World)?
Lena (like Lena Dunham or Lena Headey)?

littleorangecat22 · 21/09/2019 16:04

I really like it!

WillLokireturn · 21/09/2019 16:12

If you like Lennon go for it. It is unusual but so what?.
If you want close sounding and obvs girl's name why not Leonie? I know one 40 to Leonie and no one else with that name (she from Sierra Leone) Lennie or Leo for short. But tbh Leonie is fairly short name anyway

WillLokireturn · 21/09/2019 16:16

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonie
It means Lion. And is french in origin. Her parents were African Irish. She's the only person I know with that name over past 40 years.

percheron67 · 21/09/2019 16:21

It is grim for a child. Next door's dog is called Lennie.

WillLokireturn · 21/09/2019 16:23

I like Lennon for a girl's name. You don't have to please the whole world with your child's name. It's a cool name.

100PercentThatBitch · 21/09/2019 16:30

I like Leona/Leonie

All Lennon's I know of boys, born after Liam Gallagher's son of the same name

Grufallosfriends · 21/09/2019 16:34

Lennie is a lovely nickname for a girl.

Perhaps use Leonora, Leonie or Elena?

NoodlesMcGee · 21/09/2019 16:37

@mabiee - what about Leonie as an alternative? A very pretty, not too-out-there but still unique name?

Lennon just reminds me of John Lennon / lemons and Lennie of The Simpsons / Of Mice And Men...

AustrianSnow · 21/09/2019 16:45

There’s a girl called Len in the Chalet School books but I can’t remember what it was short for. I think it’s cute as a nickname (and Lennie) but not for Lennon.

Littlepond · 21/09/2019 16:47

Like it

ThatCurlyGirl · 21/09/2019 16:49

Ah see I love Lennon because of these two - so lovely!

crumpet · 21/09/2019 16:49

I know an Eleni, who is Leni for short.

(Eleni pronounced El-LEN-I, not Ellen-i)

kenandbarbie · 21/09/2019 17:04

I don't even like it as a boys name.

janey15 · 21/09/2019 17:42

I think you will always see far more extreme views on Mumsnet than in real life! If you like it go for it - it doesn't matter what other people think. I think Leni or Lennie are both great names but it's your choice x

BottleCrow · 21/09/2019 18:33

Gorgeous

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 21/09/2019 18:35

I know a Lenore who is a Lennie. Loads of options to get to Lennie, though:
Leonora
Eleanor
Magdalen
Gwendolen (maybe not, think that's meant to be a -lyn)
and all the variations thereof.

I like the 'lane' pronunciation of Leni, but Leni Riefenstahl would be too strong a resonance, I think.

Twisique · 21/09/2019 18:48

Elena

user1493494961 · 21/09/2019 22:14

Dreadful, change your name to Lennon.

mabiee · 21/09/2019 22:35

Thanks all... feeling v torn! Could I use Lennie as full name? I say this as someone with a long ‘proper’ bc name and has only ever been called by a nickname for it. (think Katherine -> Kitty)
But obviously I want a name that will carry her through life.
I quite like Elena and Eleni and have not 100% ruled out Lennon but probs won’t use it.

If you and your other half love it then that should always be enough. You’ll never please everyone, especially if you’re choosing a slightly unconventional name. I personally really like it.

Lennon as a full name, Lennie as a super cute nickname and if your DD ends up being girly and feels it is too unisex/boy-ish she could go by Lena instead which is also lovely! Go for it!
