Don't call your baby Morag!

Can anyone come up with Rock n roll name for me instead of Morag?
I had years of verbal bullying at the particularly hard secondary school I went to, where I was called Morhag, Morslag, Morerags.
I've hated the name for ever and the abuse has stayed with me, I Hmm am thinking about changing it!

Aggie?

Mairead?

Marie (pronounced the Scottish way, Mah-ri)

pantaloonietunes · 20/09/2019 00:21

Morrie?

LightDrizzle · 20/09/2019 00:26

Ah! That’s such a shame.
I know two people who changed their names.
Is there not a name you’ve always loved when you hear it? You can choose anything you want! Give us a shortlist.
Does is need to be similar to Morag?

mamakoukla · 20/09/2019 00:29

Moira?

LightDrizzle · 20/09/2019 00:30

I like Maggie and it’s quite rock n roll.
Or Myvanwy/ Myfanwy

lexiepuppy · 20/09/2019 00:34

The kinder children called me Aggie!
I have a cousin Moira, and no it doesn't need to be close to Morag.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions, after an abusive marriage I am thinking of reinventing myself!

Magda is a cool name and not too far removed from Morag 😊

Kokeshi123 · 20/09/2019 00:36

I'm so sorry you were picked on at school because of your name--that's so horrible.

I have always thought that if I decided to change my first name, I would take a look in my family tree and find a name of a relative from a few generations ago that I liked. Allows quite a bit of room for individual preference, but also provides a simple answer to the whole awkward "so... why did you choose THAT name?" questions from people.

I think the problem with choosing a different "version" is that it's a bit of a "fudge" and a lot of people won't use the new version. The people I know who successfully changed their names as adults picked a distinctly different name, and were absolutely ruthless about refusing to answer to the "old" name--they also did things officially through deed poll.

Shortfeet · 20/09/2019 00:42

Morven

Astronica · 20/09/2019 00:42

I'm so sorry to hear. I think that unfortunately bullies can take any name and turn it into something torturing. I think it's a great idea to change your name if that's what you want and re-invent yourself! I know 2 people who have changed their names - one a young adult woman and the other an older woman. Both found it quite a relief, like shedding an unfortunate past.

Tojigornot · 20/09/2019 00:52

I like Maggie, but if it doesn’t need to be close to Morag you need give us some clues about what names you like. And maybe how old you are.

I’ve always liked Ali, but that probably shows my age.

Rachelover60 · 20/09/2019 01:15

I quite like the name 'Morag'. I've known a couple and not come across people taking the mick out of it.

Meghan is nice and so is Marguerite or Margot.

Durgasarrow · 20/09/2019 01:24

I knew a horrible girl named Morag. I'm sure you're lovely, though.

GibbonLover · 20/09/2019 01:28

I am thinking of reinventing myself!

How exciting! You can be anyone you bloody well want to be. I do like Maggie, Magda, Mags and I knew a very kind nurse called Mairead once so I've always liked that too.

Will there be new hair to go with the new name do you think?

lexiepuppy · 20/09/2019 01:43

Funnily enough I am thinking of changing my hair colour and going from blonde to red. I have blonde curls and fancy something radical!
Interesingly my cousin Moira changed her name to Ella, and my nanna was called Phyllis and changed her name to Poppy.

My auntie is Mairead and calls herself Maisie

Gingerkittykat · 20/09/2019 02:14

Are you Scottish? Do you want another Scottish name? How old are you?

It's hard to pick a name for someone without knowing their personality.

I actually like Morag, and the Morags I knew from school never endured any of the horrible bullying you did.

Poppins2016 · 20/09/2019 02:20

What alternative names do you find yourself drawn to, OP? So we know we're on the right track...

SeaToSki · 20/09/2019 02:28

Raggie
Raggs
Rach
Raque
Rachel

Trying to get away from the Mor sound

TooMuch87 · 20/09/2019 03:14

Molly? I do like Morag though.

joystir59 · 20/09/2019 03:42

Maura is lovely I think. I have a friend Maura.

MeganTheVegan · 20/09/2019 03:48

@lexiepuppy I love to hear stories of people reinventing themselves! What kind of names do you like?
