Don't call your baby Morag!

Can anyone come up with Rock n roll name for me instead of Morag?
I had years of verbal bullying at the particularly hard secondary school I went to, where I was called Morhag, Morslag, Morerags.
I've hated the name for ever and the abuse has stayed with me, I Hmm am thinking about changing it!

Méabh / Maeve
Warrior queen of Ireland, she was a badass!

Funnily enough I like the names Stevie and Syd, but I just don't know if they suit my personality. I was bold and out going, travelled parts of the world solo before marriage. After the abusive marriage and childhood difficult stuff was brought up in counselling through women's aid, plus bullying at school, I no longer know who I am.

Just Mòr?
Or Morna?

(I'm sorry you were made fun of but your name and those 2 are some of my favourite names. Dd has a Gaelic name and loves it. Gets a big kick out of correcting people's pronunciation etc)

Thankyou for all your kindness, after being married to a narcissist and his mother for 18 years, (and i do not bandy the narcissistic tag around easily), I understand that recovery from a relationship is a million times worse. They literally suck your soul from you.
I love all of your suggestions.Grin

Margot, Megan?

delilabell · 20/09/2019 06:40

Op I'm so sorry to hear how horrible life has been but you have been amazingly strong to get through it.
How about emmeline after emmeline pankhurst a strong women who stuck to her belieg (or emmie or lina)
Or Billie after Billie holiday for supporting the course of black people when things were so difficult.
I think you deserve a strong name to show everything you've survived like a badge of honour.

Fudgecakes · 20/09/2019 06:45

Sorry to hear you've been bullied. From one bullied person to another...Flowers

How about Mirren? Worked with someone whose sister was called Mirren and it made me think she sounded mystical and serene!

Ofitck · 20/09/2019 06:56

Margo? It's pretty cool and it's a anagram of Morag!

I really like Stevie.

Maxine and Roxanne are names I think of as Rock and roll and cool but there was a Maxine thread recently and it seems to be only me who thinks this!

Rock and roll is how you live. After all, who are more rock and roll than Debbie Harry and Marianne Faithfull?

PushkinTheCat · 20/09/2019 09:36

Morwenna! I only know one. It has Celtic roots, and (to me) sounds a little mysterious....a good name for reinvention. Good luck!

yearinyearout · 20/09/2019 09:43

Kokeshi123 what's with crossing out almost your entire post? It makes it difficult to read.

IVflytrap · 20/09/2019 09:56

Merryn? Amara?

Stevie and Syd are pretty cool. If you want something more gender neutral, how about Morgan? It's Morag rearranged with a letter added. For something different: Skye, Tasmin, Kezia, Erin, Rowan, Alexis, Talia, Orla, Vashti, Saskia, Amber, Frida, Aster, Joni, Ezri, Sidonie, Anais, Noemie.

IVflytrap · 20/09/2019 09:58

Kokeshi's post looks fine to me, @yearinyearout. Maybe it's your phone?

Mxyzptlk · 20/09/2019 10:07

I'm guessing you want to get away from anything resembling Morag?
Stevie or Syd sound great.
You are still that adventurous person, you just need some time to readjust to being who you want to be.

lexiepuppy · 20/09/2019 10:14

This is my first time on mumsnet. Thanks for all your name choices, I will run them by my daughter and have a good think. I am hoping to change everything by the New Year, obviously a cliche, but I will roll with it!
Bless you all!Smile

You said you like Stevie - I wouldn't normally say that was one of my favourites, but I think it might fit your circumstances very well. It sounds friendly and dynamic to me. If you like a rock star vibe, I can also think of one female and a couple of male rock stars who have used it.

I've always thought of Sarah as a very strong sounding name too, and some name books claim that it used to be used as an "anglicisation" of Morag, although there's no actual connection between them. (From wiki: "Mòrag, a Scottish female given name, sometimes translated as Sarah.") But I think you might be looking for something a bit more individual.

Other names I can think of that might have the right sort of strong/rock chick vibe:

Stella
Ilona
Adrianna
Maya
Justine
Petra
Sasha
Saskia
Nicky (just Nicky, not short for anything, although you could pick a long version if you wanted)
Georgie
Paris

Isadora2007 · 20/09/2019 10:27

Maura!
Should also get approval from your daughter as she was a popular contestant on love island this year!

Kokeshi123 · 20/09/2019 10:30

Sorry, I don't think my post is crossed out...? It might be a technical glitch, but it looks okay to me...

Whowouldfardelsbear · 20/09/2019 10:32

Sylvie? Kind of like Stevie. Love that name but not anticipating anymore DDs!

bobstersmum · 20/09/2019 10:39

I think Maggie is cool and not too far from Morag although I know you said that didn't matter. Good luck with your fresh start!

Teacakeandalatte · 20/09/2019 10:46

I like Stevie too but if you do decide on something close to Morag I think Maura or Maggie are both nice.

HeadLikeAFuckinOrange · 20/09/2019 10:55

Morven?
Margot?

Good luck on your reinventing yourself OP, it sounds like you deserve a new start! Flowers

Cookit · 20/09/2019 11:13

Katie because of Katie Morag Smile

PullingMySocksUp · 20/09/2019 11:16

What about Caroline? I feel that from your post.

You don’t have a middle name you like, I am guessing?
