Which do you prefer out of these two? Thanks!

Eleri - would assume you're Welsh - I've never heard of anyone who isn't Welsh with this name
Eleni - would assume you're Greek - same comment as above.

Sooverthemill · 16/09/2019 11:32

Both are lovely. As I'm a grecophile I'd go for Eleni. Sometimes wish I'd called my DD that ( though she has an awesome name)

FizzyGreenWater · 16/09/2019 11:38

If you're not Welsh, don't go with Eleri - it's hard to get the pronunciation right and if you don't live in Wales she will have a lifetime of her name being mangled horribly. It's kind of like El-EH-ri but that's not even quite right, you just have to hear a Welsh person say it...

Eleni means 'this year' to me. Same stresses as Eleri really.

I would find something else. Especially as it's a pretty much odds on chance she will end up as Ellie!

funmummy48 · 16/09/2019 11:41

I think Eleri is lovely.

WellTidy · 16/09/2019 11:44

I am Welsh, with a Welsh name, but don't live in Wales. I am absolutely forever telling people how I pronounce my name, and they so very rarely get it right. It is enormously frustrating and I find it embarrassing as there really are only so many times that you can politely correct somebody. It ends up that very few people pronounce my name properly.

My name isn't Eleri btw! Similarities, though. But I thought hard about the names that I gave my DC because I didn't want them to be in the same position as I find myself daily.

Divgirl2 · 16/09/2019 12:44

To chime in on the correct pronunciation of Eleri it's kind of El (as in Elle but shorter) eh (sing it, it's somewhere between eh and the a sound in the middle of hay) rhee (don't sing this one, it ends quite quickly). The syllable emphasis is on the middle one, and to a much lesser extend the last one. The El at the beginning is almost just a little step up into the name.
Beautiful name.

FizzyGreenWater · 16/09/2019 12:47

Excellent description there Divgirl.

MikeUniformMike · 16/09/2019 16:03

That's accent not pronunciation. It rhymes with Kerry.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 16/09/2019 16:07

I think you'll have a lifetime of pronunciation issues with Eleri. It doesn't rhyme with celery or Kerry.

CIT80 · 16/09/2019 16:10

Love the name Eleri was on my list but Dh wasn’t keen. I also love the name Elena, not a fan of Eleni as I see it as the welsh word rather than a name

MikeUniformMike · 16/09/2019 16:11

Course not. Every Eleri I know, and I know many, says her name wrongly, and so does everyone they know.

cuddlyquarry · 16/09/2019 17:13

Think we’ve decided on Eleni! Any middle name ideas?

Scruffalicious · 16/09/2019 18:26

How many syllables do you want for middle name, and what's the first letter of the surname, if you don't mind answering?

cuddlyquarry · 16/09/2019 19:21

I don’t really mind... surname begins with cl and is 2 syllables!

Congrats on your choice!

I like a three-syllable middle with Eleni:

Eleni Madeleine
Eleni Abigail
Eleni Rebecca
Eleni Beatrix
Eleni Jennifer
Eleni Violet
Eleni Tabitha

Eleni Jennifer I think is particularly gorgeous.

user1471453978 · 16/09/2019 19:50

Definitely Eleri very pretty name xx

Allthepinkunicorns · 16/09/2019 20:00

I love Eleni but I'm biased as it's my mums name 😀

CIT80 · 16/09/2019 23:27

Eleni Joy ?
I think it needs a one syllable name with it ??

HollowTalk · 16/09/2019 23:32

Though Eleri sounds like celery without the "c"

That's not how you pronounce Eleri, though. It's Elle Air Ree

It's Welsh and I love it.

NetballHoop · 16/09/2019 23:37

Eleri just reminds me of Ellery Hanley the rugby player who I honestly never had a crush on at all ever.

IdblowJonSnow · 16/09/2019 23:40

I know an Eleni, she is the nicest woman (really) ever so I'd go for that one.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 17/09/2019 00:03

I see you’ve already chosen, but just to reiterate... Eleri definitely does NOT sound like celery without the ‘c’.
It’s a lovely name... as is Eleni, OP, congrats.

Joeybee · 17/09/2019 05:16

Eleri I much prefer as it is more clearly obvious how to say and spell it. You can get El/Ellie as a nickname from it too. I think it sounds lovely and different but familiar enough to not sound too strange.

GotToGoMyOwnWay · 17/09/2019 06:39

I agree that Eleni needs a one syllable middle name. I’d go with Eleni Jane. Something simple. My name is a pain in the arse Greek name & I'm forever grateful that my mum insisted on a simple middle name that I use a lot of the time when I can’t be bothered to spell my first name, which is most of the time.

niceberg · 17/09/2019 08:51

I am close to an Eleni. Absolutely love the name, although she does have a lot of mispronunciation. It's El-ENN-ee, not E-lainey or ELENN-ee.

Eleni Sofia?
