Rupert as a boys name

I’ve always loved the name and it was the only nam I thought of during pregnancy for my little boy, so far the name has had negative reactions from generation above me ( that’s a posh name, Jilly Cooper character, army slang)
But opinions from my own generation seem more positive - I like the think name because I don’t know any Ruperts, but when I found out Rupert Was the name of the chap who played Ron in Harry Potter I thought it was a nice name!
I know there’s also Rupert bear but that’s cute and if i avoided kids tv show names I wouldn’t never find a name!
Please give me opinions for or against this name?!

@Lamentations lol Grin spose I should have phrased the thread ‘naming my boy Rupert’! In all fairness this is my first baby and I’m sleep deprived - that’s my excuse Wink

@daisypond thank you! Smile

@SAHD2020 yes @Jaguar2017 was incredibly rude about the name, if they dont like the name fair enough but no need to be so nasty. I’m glad to have heard from a real life Rupert! I think it’s a lovely name Smile

Thanks everyone who’s commented so far, it is helpful to hear opinions!

Rupert was on my list but DH said it sounded like a posh boys name. Hmm We went with James instead!

Lamentations · 06/09/2019 09:19

I forgot to say that I like it too!

I love Rupert and if DD had been a boy she’d have been Rupert Alexander. I know it’s a marmite name but you can’t ever please everyone and if you love it, that’s the main thing. I also agree with a previous poster that there is so much more variety with names now that the children don’t bat an eye at anything more unusual.

I also liked Percy but DH ruled that out too as his dad used to say he was going off ‘to point Percy at the porcelain’ meaning he was going for a wee 🤦🏻‍♀️

I don't really like Rupert but it is the sound more than any particular association I don't like. I currently know a very cute little boy with that name. He's not particularly posh as far as I can tell, just somewhere in the middle.

PS - the title "Rupert as a boys' name" intrigued me, as I thought for a moment that someone had been suggesting it would be better as a girls' name!

Grufallosfriends · 15/09/2019 14:38

Yes, it's a good boys name!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 15/09/2019 14:44

I like it, my friend has a daughter whose nick name is Rupert because my friend liked it so much and was determined to use it despite not having the son she thought she was expecting.

MissHenty · 15/09/2019 22:08

@Feedmylambs OP did you make any decisions?

Feedmylambs · 15/09/2019 22:17

@MissHenty yes I went with Rupert in the end! I’m glad I did as it really suits him and now I can call him roo while he’s little Smile thanks all for your contributions Star

@Feedmylambs I'm so glad to read this post. I have a 5 year old called Rupert, who I absolutely adore, and the name definitely suits him. I'm Irish and my husband is English, so I can totally understand where you're coming from. It was my husbands favourite name, so we went for it. I was so nervous and unsure about it though, as I knew it would raise a lot of eyebrows, especially with my family. I must admit, every so often I do have a mild panic about it. But I have to say reading this post has reassured me again, and I know my son loves his name x
