Rupert as a boys name

I’ve always loved the name and it was the only nam I thought of during pregnancy for my little boy, so far the name has had negative reactions from generation above me ( that’s a posh name, Jilly Cooper character, army slang)
But opinions from my own generation seem more positive - I like the think name because I don’t know any Ruperts, but when I found out Rupert Was the name of the chap who played Ron in Harry Potter I thought it was a nice name!
I know there’s also Rupert bear but that’s cute and if i avoided kids tv show names I wouldn’t never find a name!
Please give me opinions for or against this name?!

You could always go for Robert - it’s the same name with the same roots and is due a revival. But I do like Rupert.

99bb · 05/09/2019 14:52

Love it

SwizzelStick · 05/09/2019 16:26

Rupert is awful.

Roselilly36 · 05/09/2019 16:30

Sorry I don’t like it.

aliensprig · 05/09/2019 17:21

@Feedmylambs I'm also in North Wales and would say the majority of people in this particular area have English names. I think it depends on the county, I assume towards places like Blaenau you'd have predominantly Welsh names in schools. We'd love to give our little one a Welsh name but I don't think it would be received well in the family (we're not Welsh in the slightest but learning).

Jaguar2017 · 05/09/2019 17:28

Rupert! - is this a wind-up? Poor child having to live with that name.

Ohyesiam · 05/09/2019 17:36

If you like it go for it.
Some people will love it, some will hate it, but it’s hiw you feel about it that counts.

MarshaBradyo · 05/09/2019 18:05

It is a marmite name for sure

MissHenty · 05/09/2019 18:38

@MarshaBradyo it can’t be that marmite - there were nearly 600 kids named Rupert last year - it’s massively gaining in popularity and about to enter the top 100

MarshaBradyo · 05/09/2019 18:45

Going by this thread then

Tbh I kinda fluffed it as just went with it for middle name

MarshaBradyo · 05/09/2019 18:46

That was ten years ago though

KronksSpinachPuffs · 05/09/2019 19:40

I think it's a bit too posh for my liking if I'm being really honest!

percheron67 · 05/09/2019 20:14

Great choice.

MissHenty · 05/09/2019 20:34

@MarshaBradyo lovely middle name. Yes you’re right about this thread x

sorrythisusernameistaken · 05/09/2019 20:37

It's on my list but my husband won't have it 😭 Rupes is such a cute NN too

Lebkuchenlovers · 05/09/2019 21:10

I like it.

But I really don't like the nickname Rupes HmmConfused

Feedmylambs · 05/09/2019 23:02

@MissHenty can I ask what site you’re using for name popularity? Smile want to have a nosy!

It was on our shortlist too.

DramaAlpaca · 06/09/2019 00:04

Absolutely hate it. Sorry.

Nettleweed · 06/09/2019 00:30

I think it’s a lovely name.

Jellycat00 · 06/09/2019 02:49

I think it's lovely. I went on a date with a Rupert many years ago and everyone sniggered at his name (he was lovely, private school, posh type). But nowadays i don't think people think of it that way as so many names in that 'set' are getting popular - Henry, Sebastian, Freddie, Archie etc.
I think it's a lovely name. And 'Roo' is such a sweet nickname.

daisypond · 06/09/2019 07:17

Feedmylambs
Look at darkergreen. names.darkgreener.com/#rupert
There has been a dramatic rise in the popularity of Rupert in the last few years but it’s still not very popular.

butteryellow · 06/09/2019 07:21

I've known two Ruperts in my life (one always called Roo, one often called Roops). They were both lovely people, who (if it was my kind of name) I would have no trouble naming my kids and thinking of.

Go for it.

All this going on about micky taking when it comes to names really can't be as much of a thing as it used to be - schools are (hopefully) better about bullying, and with people from all over, Rupert is hardly likely to be the most unusual name in your kids class - kids couldn't care less.

Lamentations · 06/09/2019 07:30

I love that you've said 'as a boys name'.

SAHD2020 · 06/09/2019 07:31

@Jaguar2017.....what a mean thing to say. My name is Rupert and I'm proud to be called that. There is nothing wrong with the name!
