Sydney for a girl?

OH is REALLY set on calling DD Sydney, I'm just not convinced. I'm really struggling to imagine myself saying it and have always seen it as a really masculine name.
It takes us ages to decide on a name we both like as there isn't much we agree on and I would normally push for something I like more BUT his reasoning on this one is he wanted to honour his grandfather (sidney) who he was really close to but we have only had girls. I completely get this as our DD1 has our mothers names as middle names and I think it's a really beautiful idea but I'm struggling to get excited about the name. How would you shorten it? I don't like the sound of Nee, Dee or Syd 😬.

Help please ladies! Help me understand it can be a pretty girls name or how I find a compromise with him.

It's ugly and sounds like you wished she was a boy.

How about Sidonie, an actual girls name?

MrsBertBibby · 26/08/2019 08:48

Sydney is a girl's name, but I don't like it much.

IckleBear · 26/08/2019 08:49

I don't like it, not very nice for a girl..
How about Eden?

Ouch44 · 26/08/2019 08:56

I know a Cydney. I really like it! Somehow don't associate it with Sydney either!

Not sure about the potential for other kids teasing etc but my DD has never commented on it

AverageMummy · 26/08/2019 08:57

It’s horrible sorry

bridgetreilly · 26/08/2019 09:07

It is a girls name, but I agree with a pp that I don't like it much. Plus it's a placename so she'll get all the 'were you conceived there?' comments.

Sidonie might be better. Or use it as a middle name?

Allyo19 · 26/08/2019 09:08

Maybe as a middle name...

tierraJ · 26/08/2019 09:10

Sydney is the main character in the Scream films

user1493494961 · 26/08/2019 09:33

Not for me. Use as a middle name. You'll have to decide on something you both like, it won't be fair to DD if you're embarrassed to tell people her name.

daisypond · 26/08/2019 09:46

Sidonie is lovely and a million times nicer.

daisypond · 26/08/2019 09:56

Meant to add, and shortened to Sido, like the writer Colette. Sidonie was her name.

IsobelRae23 · 26/08/2019 10:03

Makes me think of the Scream film. I actually quite like it.

miamiibiza · 26/08/2019 10:03

I really like Sydney for a girl

Motherofmermaids · 26/08/2019 10:14

Wow. You guys are brutal.

OK so thanks all for taking the time to give your honest opinions. Doesn't appear to be a very popular choice but that's OK too, there are a lot of names we don't like either. I think I probably like it more than a lot of you as it doesn't repulse me but the job of convincing me it's the 'one' hasn't been successful either 😂

Sydney IS evidently a girls name but seems to be a bit marmite, personally not keen on Sidonie but will definitely have a chat with OH about using it as a middle name if we can't agree for first name.

No, it just makes me think of Sid James.

rosieposey · 26/08/2019 10:24

I know a Cydney and she is beautiful and nice :-) it really suits her.

I think if I were going to choose it as a name I'd use that spelling, there was a beautiful famous vintage film star called Cydney.

TheFaerieQueene · 26/08/2019 10:25

Me too @Frith2013. 🤭

milliefiori · 26/08/2019 10:25

I know three females with that name though both are spelled Sydnee not Sydney. One is elderly, glamorous, talented and has had an exciting life the other two are little girls. I like it by association with my lovely friend. It's quite a cool name, I think.

watchman2016 · 26/08/2019 10:31

One of my DD's friends is called Sidnie, everyone calls her Sid, she is 15, never been teased or bullied about it, I think it's a cool name.

Nearlyalmost50 · 26/08/2019 10:36

I like it. I also think of Cyd Charisse.

On here, people prefer names like Edith, Olive and Violet

My test is: would I like to be called the name myself? I would rather face the world as a Sydney, less as an Olive (no pun intended).

Its just a matter of personal preference.

Colourfulest · 26/08/2019 11:07

Oh I LOVE Sydney for a girl 😁

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 26/08/2019 11:10

I know quite a few girl Sydney’s. I don’t know any male Sydney’s.
It’s a girls name and not my choice but then lots of names not my choice and you’d probably dislike the names I have given my children.

I would never be rude enough to tell someone I didn’t like the name choice or to gossip about it.

If it’s a name you both like go for it. She won’t be the first female with that name or the last.

Colourfulest · 26/08/2019 11:10

For those of you thinking it's predominantly a boys name, you're wrong!

The graph below tells a very different story.

daisypond · 26/08/2019 11:40

The boy’s name is predominantly Sidney, not Sydney.
