Sydney for a girl?

OH is REALLY set on calling DD Sydney, I'm just not convinced. I'm really struggling to imagine myself saying it and have always seen it as a really masculine name.
It takes us ages to decide on a name we both like as there isn't much we agree on and I would normally push for something I like more BUT his reasoning on this one is he wanted to honour his grandfather (sidney) who he was really close to but we have only had girls. I completely get this as our DD1 has our mothers names as middle names and I think it's a really beautiful idea but I'm struggling to get excited about the name. How would you shorten it? I don't like the sound of Nee, Dee or Syd 😬.

Help please ladies! Help me understand it can be a pretty girls name or how I find a compromise with him.

I love the name Sydney. Love it. Was on my shortlist mostly due to Sydney from the Scream movies but also it’s just an awesome name :) and a lovely story behind it for you too.

Mintypea5 · 26/08/2019 11:52

I had a friend who's middle name
Was Sydney. Growing up I thought it was really cool Smile

The thing is, the Op said she's not keen, it's her DH who wants it.

Pieceofpurplesky · 26/08/2019 12:44

I love it and know a couple. They are both really cute

InsertFunnyUsername · 26/08/2019 12:47

If you aren't keen I wouldn't go for it, that said I do like the name and dont think of a boy.

LatteLove · 26/08/2019 12:48

I quite like it, even though it’s not the type of name I’d usually go for

Disfordarkchocolate · 26/08/2019 12:50

I would agree to use it as a middle name, probably spelt Cydney. Good luck, it's not fair to pick a first name you don't like.

hexagon01 · 26/08/2019 13:31

I like it, I think it suits all ages and makes me think of someone really cool.

HeadintheiClouds · 26/08/2019 13:32

Dd has a friend called Sydney, I thought it was really odd at first but it kind of suits her. I wouldn’t use it myself, though.

HeadintheiClouds · 26/08/2019 13:33

Don’t spell it Cydney Hmm. Why would you?

KeepStill · 26/08/2019 13:35

I only like it as a girl's name, spelled as you have spelled it. Elizabeth Bowen has a cool heroine called Sydney.

cokezerothezerohero · 26/08/2019 13:36

My 9 year old pug is called Sidney

He suits it 👀

Therefore it's a dog name to me, and a no..even though I obviously like the name 🙈

LeithWalk · 26/08/2019 13:47

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it.

Always have, since watching 'Little House on the Prairie' as a child. The youngest daughter 'Carrie Ingles' was played by twins - Lindsay and Sydney Greenbush. - it just stuck, such a lovely names.

Pennyeleanor · 26/08/2019 13:48

I love it!!

Endless "jokes" about where (and how) she was conceived

Yes, that must be a terrible trial for all the people called Austin, Georgia, Florence, Shannon, Devon, Paris, Erin, Chelsea, Carolina, Savannah, Victoria, India...

"jokes" about where (and how) she was conceived

My name is also a place name. It’s much more unusual than Sydney.
I do get jokes when I first meet people about whether I was conceived in said place but all I say is ‘no I wasn’t!’ And that’s it. It’s not a big deal. Despite the jokes, I’m always told it’s a beautiful name.
I’m sure a girl named Sydney would fare the same

Oysterbabe · 26/08/2019 15:55

I do think of it as a girl's name but I also think it's a very ugly name.

user1493494961 · 26/08/2019 18:10

Use it as a middle name. If she thinks Syd is cool and edgy when she's 15 then she can use it. Equally, she might think why on earth did they name me after Great Grandad. I would give her her own first name.

MadameJosephine · 26/08/2019 18:10

I like it. I actually prefer if for a girl rather than a boy. It’s my DD’s middle name, although we stuck with the Sidney spelling, just like her grandad

Tillygetsit · 26/08/2019 22:59

Please please dont. It's my very worst name. So ugly and kidney sounding.

kittycat01 · 26/08/2019 23:05

@Motherofmermaids I like it!

kelly14 · 27/08/2019 23:01

My daughter is called Sydney and I love it, and still love it despite reading how many people hate it lol
My daughter on other hand (14) says she hates it!! And also hates my little boys name ( Maximo but is mainly called Max) and says she dreads to think what I’m gonna call this one lol 😂
There is always going to be people who hate any name you choose, there are names I hate but as long as you like that’s all that matters.
So if your not sure then don’t go for it.
