I've loved this name for as long as I remember. Just putting the feelers out to see what others think. Surname would also begin with a G.

OP posts:

Galatea was one of the Muses wasn’t she?

boredboredboredboredbored · 25/08/2019 20:58

What now?

CornedBeef451 · 25/08/2019 21:02

I like it. I have a very dull name and still have to spell it every time so why not have a pretty one instead!

Jamhandprints · 25/08/2019 21:02

Mmm, ok, that sounds ok. As a school staff member I might wonder what kind of family she came from. I'd assume Comic Book Nerd...not a bad thing.

Scissor · 25/08/2019 21:03

I might attempt some ginger snaps but it's a bit warm

Dandelion1993 · 25/08/2019 21:07

Honestly, it sounds like a name from a queen on drag race.

Kyvia · 25/08/2019 21:08

I actually thought this was an easy name to pronounce from its spelling 😂
Lol nope! I’d have guessed at “ga-LAY-sha” (although my first take was “ga-la-TEE” which was why I thought it would be tea bags) but like I said would have had to ask to get it right. Which would probably get old quick if it was actually your name.

RedCowboyBoots · 25/08/2019 21:13

I don't think pronunciation is a huge issue here tbh. It's fairly self-explanatory to my eyes.

Plus, there are loads of names with multiple pronunciations.

bwydda · 25/08/2019 21:13

I love it. But wouldn't name my daughter it for reasons already mentioned. It means milk white. I wouldn't want the negative Greek mythology either- numerous stories of different galeteas (muse, neryid, mother etc) are mostly bad

Speakercube · 25/08/2019 21:15

Gal? As in old gal? GG as initials? =horse(gee gee)

StillIRise87 · 25/08/2019 21:16

Awful!

HebeMumsnet · 25/08/2019 21:18

Evening, everyone. We're not sure about this thread. We're going to take it down while we look into things further.

RedCowboyBoots · 25/08/2019 21:21

Wait, so this one goes down but Lennyn stands?

MichaelMumsnet · 27/08/2019 11:07

Thanks for bearing with us. Thread's back up now.

devilishlygood · 27/08/2019 11:20

I think it’s a lovely name. And the connections to the Muses, to Doctor Who, to whatever...well it all makes a more interesting story than to be lumbered with a top 20 name of the year of your birth imo.

As for spellings, these days children are in classrooms with children of all different heritages and backgrounds. Little ones with names from the Sub Continent and from Eastern Europe tend to be less easy to spell or pronounce, but no one decent would pull a face. If you can’t pronounce the kid’s name, so you just avoid that child forever?? What a terrible excuse for not having an imagination!

CountSnackula · 27/08/2019 11:44

My first thought was of the opera Acis and Galatea by Handel - they're lovers, but a rival kills Acis, so Galatea (who's a water nymph sort of thing) turns him into a river and he becomes its spirit.

I think it's gorgeous, OP, but it will also be a lifetime of spelling and pronunciation corrections for you and your DD...

IsobelRae23 · 27/08/2019 11:44

For some reason I think dessert 🤔 along with Greek Mythology. 🤷🏻‍♀️

whatausername · 27/08/2019 12:51

Galateria was my first thought. Actually, off to find some cones and chocolate sauce now.

diddlediddle · 27/08/2019 13:05

Battlestar (Galactica) was my first thought! Followed by Gelateria.

I don't find it a very pleasant name and think there's a world of lovely girls names out there but each to their own.

daisypond · 27/08/2019 13:20

I like it. Greek myths. I don’t think it’s hard to spell, even though many people won’t have heard of it before.

Diagonalli · 27/08/2019 13:24

sorry but think it sounds like an ice cream

Krisskrosskiss · 27/08/2019 13:25

I really like it! Sounds lovely. Like a mixture of celestial imagery and fancy cakes!
I love Greek names. My husband is called Leander and my daughters middle name is Eurydice.

Yika · 27/08/2019 13:28

Beautiful, melodious, elegant. Love it!

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 27/08/2019 13:57

Wasn't Galatea a statue that came to life in Greek mythology? A perfect woman (because real ones weren't good enough) that was carved by a sculptor then brought to life by the gods?

And the robot in Bicentennial Man?

Objectively I think it sounds pretty, but I wouldn't give it to a child.

Helenluvsrob · 27/08/2019 14:02

Always look up the myth.

Nice sound but are you happy with the myth association?
