I've loved this name for as long as I remember. Just putting the feelers out to see what others think. Surname would also begin with a G.

My first thought was the Trinity House ship- a useful but quite ugly vessel (aware that not everyone is a boat geek though!)

AtillatheHun · 27/08/2019 14:24

why t. f. would MN take this thread down?

OP -it's as pretentious as f. but I love it anyway - do you know the Raphael's painting of the Triumph of Galatea?

Frlrlrubert · 27/08/2019 14:24

I like it.

I wouldn't worry about people having to be told the spelling. You get that with most names unless you call all your children 'Bob'.

I've had to spell my surname my whole life and my first name (not uncommon, only one way to spell it) more often than you'd expect, no harm done.

AtillatheHun · 27/08/2019 14:28

I suspect it also depends to an extent where the name will be "worn" - a comprehensive outside Rhyl / a canning factory might be unusual environments for it, but I'll bet that the prep schools of W8 and NW3 and The Design Fair in Milan are full of Iphiginias, Calliopes and def Thalias.

It could be a pretty name, but for me my mind goes to:

Galactorrhea - a milky nipple discharge.

I know it's not the same, but I have a weird mind!

Frith2013 · 27/08/2019 17:34

With a G surname, it reminds me of Galilie Galileo! (Fighting the spellcheck to get that even approximately right)

Frith2013 · 27/08/2019 17:37

I wonder how many people will pronounce it gala - tea?

As in swimming gala and cup of...

OP, did you first hear this name from Bicentenial Man? The film with Robin Williams where he is an android trying to become human?

Literally the first thing I thought of when I read the name.

As for the name itself, I feel like it's a bit much of a name, but as a personal preference I don't like names which feel as if they were plucked out trying to be uncommon (like Acacia or Saskia).

ToothlessIsMySpiritAnimal · 27/08/2019 18:07

First thing that came to mind was the female robot in Bicentennial Man as pp have said. Love that film Grin

Guessmydog · 27/08/2019 19:24

Hey, so, I'm back! No idea why the thread was reported, I guess someone just took a real dislike to the name Confused😂

I didn't hear the name from bicentennial man, I've not seen it. Nor have I seen Dr. Who, so i don't get that reference either... Is she a good robot at least? Grin

AtillatheHun I didn't know the painting but I have just googled it, it's lovely Smile

augustagain your mind is warped...

As for Galileo Galilei - I think it's a fab name, definitely got a ring to it!

Sounds delicious , not sure anyone would appreciate it as a name though

bananasandwicheseveryday · 27/08/2019 19:34

I like it. I only knew it from Bicentennial Man - Galatea is a very cheery, 'perky' robot who he meets on his search for others like him. She also has a caring role at the end. So, for me, I would associate the name with a happy and caring personality.
