I've shortlisted my names list (I think). The only way I managed to do it was by actually writing them down on paper to see if I liked the way I physically wrote her name 🤔

So here we go! Rose will come into it somewhere as it was DP mums name who sadly passed a few years ago. I'm not a huge fan of double barrelled first names though, so will be a middle name at least.

  1. Rosalie
  2. Mabel Rose
  3. Aubrey Rose
  4. Minnie Rose
  5. Autumn Rose
  6. Winter Rose
  7. Dottie Rose (is hanging onto my shortlist by a thread)

Which of these didnt make you grimace?

I thought Aubrey was a male name too.

Autumn is lovely. Mabel is ok. I'm not fussed on the others.

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 18/08/2019 23:31

But it isn't a boys name? Wink

No, I expect you wouldn't call a boy Aubrey because it's being used as a girl's name now. Once boy's names start being used for girls, people don't like using them for boys. We couldn't possibly have any feminine connotations, and the name probably would be described as "wet" on these boards (I've seen it many times).

Of course for a girl's name to be cool it really needs to be a unisex, masculine-sounding name, because only boys boy's names are truly cool.

FWIW I like Rosalie.

DramaAlpaca · 18/08/2019 23:34

I'm going to be honest. The only ones that don't make me grimace are Rosalie, which is gorgeous, and possibly Mabel.

Aubrey will always be a boys' name to me & it's not a nice name anyway, IMO. Audrey, on the other hand, is lovely.

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 18/08/2019 23:34

I dont want cool or masculine.

I want more vintage and old fashioned, I think that's why I like Mabel, but us that becoming too popular? And Dottie.. but I dont really like dorothy Blush

Out of your list Rosalie is the only one I like (sorry! Flowers) What about Rosanna or Rosie?

CatteStreet · 18/08/2019 23:38

I'm not keen on any of them. They are all very of the moment (Rosalie seems to be having a moment much like Elsie and Evelyn). I think Mabel Rose is the best of those.

Iiwy I'd call her Rosa.

NameChange30 · 18/08/2019 23:40

There seem to be loads of little Mabels but it is the least bad on the list.

Apart from Rosalie which I do really like. It's pretty but strong somehow.

Harvey3 · 18/08/2019 23:42

I like Dorothy Rose nn Dottie the best. The Autumn and Winter combinations sound like candle fragrances.

TwoPupsandaHamster · 18/08/2019 23:43

Iiwy I'd call her Rosa

Rosa is pretty ☺️

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 18/08/2019 23:45

I thought about Rosa but me and DP watch alot of Brooklyn 99 and I cant get the character Rosa out of my head when I hear, see or say the name do I think it's off the cards for me, I do like it though.

I think you should think about your daughter as an adult - dotty doesn't exactly command respect in her chosen profession
But Dorothy could work - old lady name too which is popular but it's not quite as common as your Mabel and Evie's

I really like Aubrey, someone's always going to dislike whatever you pick. If that's your favourite name who cares what they think.

Fwiw I'd never heard of it as a boys name, I thought it was only for girls

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 18/08/2019 23:54

@yeahsurewhatever
That's a fair point, although I think if I met a older lady called Dottie I wouldnt pay her any less respect, but I do see what you mean. I'll cross Dottie off, as I dont like dorothy at all 🙈

Instead of 1. rosaline. What about Rosaleen lovely name pronounced Rosa-leen, Irish like Pauleen, Kathleen etc?

It means little Rose and us a beautiful name and is the English version of Roisin.

I quite like Winter Rose, but if I'm being totally honest even though I quite like the Rose on the end of the name it is naff and will date. I can see your thinking I myself was keen in these sorts of names until I got sensible feedback.

lliy · 18/08/2019 23:59

Aubrey Rose is beautiful !

soapona · 19/08/2019 00:00

Sorry just seen Rose is a middle name? In which case they are all quite nice, but I prefer Dorothy to Dottie.

Krisskrosskiss · 19/08/2019 00:15

I like Mabel Rose a lot! That ones my fave from your list.
Dont like Aubrey as it just really is a boys name in my head... and one of the more feminine boys names which sort of oddly makes me defensive for it as a boys name iyswim?
I love Winter and Autumn, especially with Rose as a middle name, it's the type of name idve loved to have had as a child!
I think Dottie is just short for Dorothy or Dorothea and that's what everyone will assume so if you dont like those names it's not a good idea.
I'm not keen on Rosalie.

Have you considered Rosalind and Rosamund?

Shadow1234 · 19/08/2019 01:51

Autumn Rose is beautiful

Giraffey1 · 19/08/2019 02:15

I only know Aubrey as a boy’s name.
Autumn Rose and Winter Rose sound a bit pretentious to me, sorry.
Mabel is old fashioned in my book...
Rosalie is a pretty name.
Dottie and Minnie don’t do it for me.

Nearlyalmost50 · 19/08/2019 02:57

Why not just Rose? I know only one Rose who is young, it's hardly ever chosen as a first name. Totally classy and much nicer than Aubrey/Autumn,/Winter, all the things you have chosen.

Rosecherry · 19/08/2019 02:57

I like these names the most from your list 😀 , yes your right do keep your other names as you may see baby and decide one of them suits your little one more.

  1. Rosalie
  2. Mabel
  3. Autumn
Nearlyalmost50 · 19/08/2019 02:58

Also- if you like vintage and old=fashioned, Rose is perfect. I like Rosalie second at a push.

Peachbubble · 19/08/2019 07:41

I like Aubrey and Rosalie.

ShhhBeQuiet · 19/08/2019 13:01

Aubrey.

Not keen on Winter, Dottie or Minnie

starkid · 19/08/2019 15:21

I like Rosalie and Mabel :)

I think some of the names, with Rose as a middle name, sound more like a flower hybrid or paint colour e.g. Winter Rose, Autumn Rose.
