Can I use the name Elizabeth if I don't like the nickname Liz?

Elizabeth has always been my favourite name, and I like nearly all associated nicknames (favourites are Libby, Beth, and Lizzy)

However, I can't abide Liz. It just doesn't sound nice imo (sorry to any Liz's out there!!) and I would hate to call my child this.
I am aware that DD could pick her own NN as she gets older, and is Liz always the default NN? Would I be ridiculous to consider Elizabeth if I hate Liz?

Perfectly possibly. I know Elizabeths called: Lizzie, Lizzy, Beth, Betty, Libby and Elizabeth. I only know one called Liz (me)

Liz is a mumsy nick name. You rarely hear it used on a child or anyone much under 40! As above, other nicknames are preferred. Choose the one you like!

Lizzie is the default but I’ve a really cute mn is Libby

I get called Libby or Lilibet. No one has ever called me Liz!

I think many "Lizzie"s get shortened to "Liz" as they get older and the same may happen if you stick with the full "Elizabeth". I don't think many of those known as Libby or Beth or Lily would get changed to Liz.
I have a similar long classic name. I really dislike one of the short versions. Occasionally, someone will start calling me that and I just ask them not to. No one has ever then kept calling me the other name.

We have an Elizabeth, when she was younger she went by Betsy, but now she is older she prefers Eliza/Liza. No one has ever called her Liz to my knowledge!

Lizbet, Lizbeth, Elsa, Elsie, Elizabet, Elsabette, Bette, Betty, so many variations on Elizabeth. One of my favourite names.

If you choose Libby, Beth, Betty, Betsy, Ellie etc then they’re unlikely to become Liz.

I think you’d need to pick a nickname you like and enforce it. Otherwise you run the risk of someone calling her Liz and it sticking.

If you really really hate it don’t choose Elizabeth.

My niece is an Elizabeth and has always been known as Beth by everyone. If you choose a nickname and use it, that's what people will use, unless she chooses to be known by something else when she's older.

The emphasis of Elizabeth is on the Liz. That's possibly why s lot of Elizabeth's end up as Liz?

I think it depends on where you are. In South Wales, Elizabeth is IME always shortened to liz. I know 2 , 30-40 year old liz. I know 3 , 20-30 year old liz. I know 1 , 9 year old Lizzie who will obviously be called Liz for short. I LOVE Elizabeth , but where I live means that Libby, Liza etc just wont happen. I could call her that, but colloquially amongst friends etc- she'd be Liz whether I liked it or not.

Alternative nicknames to Liz have been mentioned and are all nice. You can call her whatever you choose. However, as your daughter grows, it will be up to her what she is called informally. Who knows, she might like Liz - as it happens, so do I.

For sure you can use it. Elizabeth was a name on my list too and I'd never even considered people might use Liz as a nickname. Liz is very dated and most people now I don't think would use it. If you tell people her nickname from the start, they'll get used to it and she'll be known as that.
The great thing with Elizabeth is the amount of nickname potential - Lizzie, Beth, Bea, Eliza, Betty, Bette, Lilibet, it goes on and on.

I know a grown up Elizabeth who has always been Elizabeth. No nicknames at all. It's a great name!

I always forget to put my proper name down on forms. Been called lizzy from very young I forget it's not my actual name 😂

I love Elizabeth but don’t like Liz also. I don’t think you should use it (unless you really love it and ‘Liz’ might grown on you)

Liz is such s natural shortening that I'd avoid Elizabeth if you hate Liz!

But can i add that my dd chose a nickname that had not occurred to me , and that I didn’t like it.

But now, it has associations with my delightful dd, so it’s grown on me.

I am an Elizabeth in my early 30's and I hate Liz. I am very definitely Lizzie (or Elizabeth). I introduce myself as Lizzie and although some people (usually older people) hear that and call me Liz regardless, it does not affect what I want to be called, how I use my name etc.

Personally I don't like Libby/Betty/ Betsy etc as they have always sounded babyish to me. I was just called Elizabeth by my family until I started speaking, when Lizzie was the closest approximation of what I managed to say! Also I loved writing the letter 'z'. No one else had one in their name!

Elizabeth in my family is always called Lil or Elizabeth. Never been a Liz or Lizzie and she wouldn't answer to it. I think most Lizzies probably get shortened to Liz eventually though.
