Thoughts on the name Romy

After whittling down from a short list of 4 (also posted) I think I’ve found my baby name. It’s a little bit quirky and don’t think we’ll be coming across many others but it isn’t too unusual/strange.

Keen to to do a test run and hear people’s thoughts - both good and bad - to push me into making my final decision.

The name is Romy (pronounced Ro-me not Rom-e)

There is no need to suggest Romilly as an alternative as it doesn’t work for us

Thanks in advance!

@smashamasha excellent choice!

That is interesting as I have only come across the one so far and thought it was pretty unusual so far!

I have heard the name Remy being used more and more but for boys not girls.

I know a Romy and she is a fabulous kid

Abstractporridge · 22/06/2019 22:26

@smashamasha have you had any issues with how her name is pronounced? From spelling am thinking people may call her Rom-e (like Tommy) although don’t see this as a huge deal.

My daughters friend has this name -( my favourite girls name, love it).

AverageMummy · 22/06/2019 22:37

Isn’t Remy something you take for indigestion?
Anyway I quite like Romy although it’s not my style

BendydickCuminsnatch · 22/06/2019 22:38

Like it! Know one whose full name is Romina.

ForeignBodies · 22/06/2019 22:39

Very nice.

mamaoffourdc · 22/06/2019 22:43

Love it - know a lovely young lady with name - go for it

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 22/06/2019 22:51

Isn't Remy a boys name?

It’s Thirteen on House’s real name.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirteen_(House)

Never knew it was originally a boys name.....

Still like it!

AesopsMables · 22/06/2019 23:02

My favourite name, I am biased though Wink

smashamasha · 22/06/2019 23:32

Am secretly hoping my Romy is one of the ones you guys say are fabulous!

Sometimes people say Rom-ee and sometimes Rumi but usually people get it right. Really not an issue if they don't, I just correct them!

Mainly I just get lots of compliments on the name. I adore it and it really suits her.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 22/06/2019 23:34

An old school friend of mine named her daughter Romy and I know it was because of the film...

smashamasha · 22/06/2019 23:35

@Abstractporridge

I live in a remote rural place and have met 2 other Romy's under 5.

My eldest daughter has a beautiful name which went from off the top 100 to within the top 5 from birth to age 7. I'm fearing the same thing again - I'm such a trendsetter Smile

Switsy · 23/06/2019 01:15

It's a bit of a nothing name. Nicknamey and forgettable.

Romy and Michelle! Therefore I love it

Kokeshi123 · 23/06/2019 08:08

I also think it's very nothing-y. Sounds like it's short for something but presumably isn't.

IVEgottheDECAF · 23/06/2019 08:14

Prefer Roma

notso · 23/06/2019 09:01

I like it as a nn for Ramona.

NeverPutAWetFootInABirkenstock · 23/06/2019 09:06

I like it, it fits the same criteria as we wanted for DD’s name; not frilly, not super popular, not weird.

smashamasha · 23/06/2019 12:28

@Kokeshi123

It's short for Rosemary.

If you want it to be!

MyNewBearTotoro · 23/06/2019 12:31

I love it. I know a toddler Romany with the nn Romy.

Abstractporridge · 23/06/2019 12:53

Thanks for all the feedback!

The negative comments seem to be around the nick name like insubstantial quality of it. This really doesn’t bother us.

Interestingly despite being unusual here this name is quite popular in France, Holland and Germany. We like names that have broad appeal like this. We also really liked Greta for this reason but Romy is our favourite.

OP posts:
Sophronia · 23/06/2019 17:18

Greta is much nicer.

MikeUniformMike · 23/06/2019 17:31

I think it's a bit downmarket.
