Thoughts on the name Romy

After whittling down from a short list of 4 (also posted) I think I’ve found my baby name. It’s a little bit quirky and don’t think we’ll be coming across many others but it isn’t too unusual/strange.

Keen to to do a test run and hear people’s thoughts - both good and bad - to push me into making my final decision.

The name is Romy (pronounced Ro-me not Rom-e)

There is no need to suggest Romilly as an alternative as it doesn’t work for us

Thanks in advance!

@sophronia

We like Greta a lot, but just don’t love it as much. Romy is more unique and also softer sounding in comparison.

I like it OP.

Gorgeous name. It's a million times nicer than Romilly imo.
I love Greta too.

I would think of Romy Schneider, the epitome of 60s and 70s European cool.
She started life as Rosemarie Magdalena.

Romy is a long established German /Austrian diminutive of Rosemarie. I think it carries a certain element of Germanic charm - a good deal more Salzburg than Dusseldorf.

Yes, it makes me think of Romy Schneider. Lovely name.

Snowy81 · 25/06/2019 08:49

It’s a lovely name

Crazyladee · 25/06/2019 08:52

Not for me. Its nice for a little girl but not for an adult woman.

babysharkah · 25/06/2019 15:24

I really like it, there are two in y2 at dds school so it's gaining in popularity!

Fatkins · 25/06/2019 16:26

I used to work with one. She wasn't very nice, but I don't think that was because of her name Grin.

Trying to be objective and not think of former colleague... I don't think I'm in love with it. I'd class it along with things like Maisy, Evie and Bella. Short, sweet and girly. Nothing wrong with them at all, I just wouldn't choose it for my DD.

yeahokright · 25/06/2019 16:38

I don't like it. I think it's forgettable. But that doesn't matter. Enjoy naming your little one.

Peitho · 25/06/2019 16:48

A mere wisp of a name.

MikeUniformMike · 25/06/2019 17:58

I don't like Romilly, but Romy could be a nn for Rosemary.

Zazia · 25/06/2019 18:09

I like it. Also the spelling Romi.

Abstractporridge · 25/06/2019 18:11

@babysharkah

That’s interesting. I thought it was really unusual and have only come across one girl with this name. Seems it’s more popular than I realised!

@babysharkah

Is it the Ro-mee pronunciation? Or Rom-ee? The latter is also a nick name for Romilly so maybe the two together are boosting the numbers!

Did you go with Romy in the end OP?

Blursula · 27/04/2020 07:11

I love this name. I have a feeling it’s getting more popular as I know two baby Romys!

zscaler · 27/04/2020 11:34

I can’t get over the association with a vile character from a Jilly Cooper novel, but if it weren’t for that I think I would probably like it!
