I've never heard of Chester the molester but think molester isn't used much nowadays anyway.

It's paedo these days so I shouldn't let that put you off.

Pinkvoid · 26/05/2019 13:18

Rory

daisypond · 26/05/2019 13:31

I much prefer Rory but it seems like you really want Chester, so go for that.

MikeUniformMike · 26/05/2019 14:46

Rory. Chester is awful.

DuchessOfRednecks · 26/05/2019 14:47

Rory.

Chester is a bit canine alright.

SauvignonBlanche · 26/05/2019 14:50

Chester - beautiful city and great name for a dog
Rory - great name.

DramaAlpaca · 26/05/2019 14:53

Rory Elliott sounds better to me than Chester Elliott.

I love Rory & really hate Chester, though I appreciate the sentimental reasons for wanting to use it. I've never heard of the horrible comic strip. You could squeeze Chester in as another middle name.

sincethereis · 26/05/2019 15:01

Chester- dog name, molester, awful
Rory- lovely

FunInTheSun2019 · 26/05/2019 15:04

I love Chester Elliot 😊

To me sounds as an adult name, a very professional name..I would presume private schooling, mum and dad good jobs etc..

Go for what you feel is right, I don't ever think MN is the right place to ask for advice on baby names!

And congratulations on your pregnancy ❤️

Hope these comments haven’t spoilt the name Chester for you at all. I came on here to get ideas for names and people’s opinions but didn’t think it’d be quite so crude. I think it’s quite bizarre to make that the first reason not to like the name, children can be bullied for anything.
Having said that. I prefer Rory, great strong name imo. Chester’s a bit more surname-like to me but ok if you like that vibe.

Rory Chester, not sure on Chester as a first name x

Malyshek · 26/05/2019 19:20

I'll confess that I don't like giving "family" names to babies. I always feel like they need to build their own identity, and when you name them after a family member there's always gonna be unspoken expectations that the baby will share x quality/trait with the original bearer of the name.

Beside that, I don't really like the name Chester - though that is purely a personal dislike. It just sounds more like a last name to me.

Rory wouldn't be my first choice because I find the double "R" difficult to pronounce, but I do like it better than Chester. Also I liked Rory in Dr. Who.

That said, this is YOUR baby's name. If you like Chester, that's all that matters. Don't listen to people who say it reminds them of X thing. If you really look, ANY name can have negative connotations. For instance I love the name Nikolas, but I'm sure someone somewhere would tell me that it's boring, it ends with "ass", it was the name of the last Russian tsar who was tragically killed by the communists...

Long story short : if you really like Chester, go for it and don't ask anyone's opinion, especially not well-meaning family and friends. Let alone random strangers on the internet !

I agree with you. Dh was named after two dead relatives (awful names, too, to my ear) and was firmly against naming DD after anyone, living or dead.

That said, each to their own. There are worse names.

KirstyT11 · 28/05/2019 17:24

Love them both. They were both on my list but Chester got vetoed as theres a little town near us with it in its name.

Rory was on the very short shortlist for a boy. We had a girl so didn't need to fight it out over rory or jasper(our other fave).
I think if Chester has such a lovely meaning to you both go with that... or wait and see what feels right when baby arrives.

OhhMyLittleGirls · 28/05/2019 19:05

I vote Chester! Its a lovely name, and kids will find a way to tease any name ( As much as they can say Chester the Molester they can say Gory Rory) it sounds like you prefer Chester anyway so I’d go with that or you might regret it!

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 28/05/2019 19:30

Chester- great name for a cat or dog (I know 3)
Rory- I always want to sing ‘Rory the racing car, Rory the number 1 star...’ probably from hearing it on repeat when ds was small.

But it’s what you think that matters! Don’t worry about cats and dogs, or Chester the molester. Pick what you feel is right.
