Zelda - how 'out there'?

DH and I apparently do not agree on any girl names. I mean ANY. Apart from maybe this one. My only doubts are that it's a bit too off-the-wall. I want to avoid anything top ten/massively popular - but not to the extent of everyone who hears it thinking "you're called what now?!"

I guess I'm less interested in people's opinions (it's always a question of taste, and I definitely LIKE it) than how weird you think it is ( if it's at all possible to distinguish those two things).

So where would you place it on a scale of 1 (Emily/Olivia/simple/classic/boring) to 10 (Hepzibah/Andromeda/unusual/mad)?

The bully from Grange Hill was Imelda.

I immediately thought of Fitzgerald.

HeadfirstForHalos · 06/05/2019 19:53

I'd put it as a 6. Love the name, its unusual but not "out there".

Duvetdweller · 06/05/2019 19:53

I’m 43 and have a friend is called Zelda so I think it’s totally normal

PotteringAlong · 06/05/2019 19:54

I know a Zelda (named for Fitzgerald!). She’s in her 40’s.

I like it.

Sybelline · 06/05/2019 19:54

Reminds me of Zelda Fitzgerald. Although she had a bit of a sad life.
Nice name, not particularly out there.

Longdistance · 06/05/2019 19:55

I think Robin Williams’ daughter is Zelda.

NameChanginator · 06/05/2019 20:02

When was the video game big? Is it still 'a thing'? Just wondering if it's more likely to be er friend's parents who make that connection than contemporaries, if that makes sense.

The game is still a thing, it's a long running series, extremely popular and some of the best selling games in the world.

daisypond · 06/05/2019 20:32

I like it and I don’t think it’s out there. I think of Zelda Fitzgerald. Not heard of the game. Maybe a six for unusualness.

Summerwalk · 06/05/2019 20:34

Horrible, just awful

Watto1 · 06/05/2019 20:36

A bit on the ‘out there’ side but totally fabulous !

Apileofballyhoo · 06/05/2019 20:37

I thought of Fitzgerald immediately and didn't think of the Nintendo game at all, even though DS is playing it at the moment.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 06/05/2019 20:40

I immediately thought of terrahawks too but that probably won’t be an issue with younger people.

namewobble · 06/05/2019 20:41

I like it, but I've never been near a video game and that's my first association.

Still it's phonetic (easy to spell), nice set of sounds, begins with the ever-cool letter Z. You mention Hepzebah and it kind of has a similar feel to me, but I often roll DS around a Methodist cemetery and there are a few of both among the Ezekiels and Zebediahs....all niche popular nowadays.

namewobble · 06/05/2019 20:42

I'd rate it a 6, but I know some flipping nuts girls names.

stucknoue · 06/05/2019 20:43

Sci-fi/computer gaming/witch kind of name.

strongandlong · 06/05/2019 20:45

I think Fitzgerald first too.

I know a (lovely) 13yo Zelda.

I'd score it 5/10. Easy to spell, easy to pronounce. An excellent name.

zen1 · 06/05/2019 20:49

I quite like it, but my Nintendo-obsessed DC has made me only see it in gaming connotations.

newtlover · 06/05/2019 20:54

apparently the man who wrote the games named the character after Zelda Fitzgerald (DS informs me)
I'd rate it at 7, quite acceptable score

Sophronia · 06/05/2019 21:03

I think it’s fine. I wouldn’t think of the games.

NameChanginator · 06/05/2019 21:03

The gaming connection doesn't particularly bother me, but I'm completely ignorant of video games do I can't really judge how the names sounds in that context. To me, it's: roaring 20s, intelligent, bit tragic but on a sort of wronged-woman, feisty, exotic way. I don't know whether other people would get "fairy princess" or "street fighter" or something in between the two or what!

If that's the zone you're in, what about Anaïs, Isolde, Simone, Mina, something of that ilk?

(Go for Zelda, if you like it though)

pineapplepatty · 06/05/2019 21:12

Not crazy but I'd think you were massive dancers

pineapplepatty · 06/05/2019 21:13

Gamers. Not dancers!

newtlover · 06/05/2019 21:16

easy to spell and pronounce, good points
whereas Anais often mis-spelt and mis pronounced, even by the parents who chose it, according to a recent thread
