Nyree. I met a girl on holiday when I was about 10, her name was Nyree and i liked it a lot but I've never met another. Online it says its English but also references Australia and New Zealand. My other name choices are Sophia and Annabelle so it's quite different to those. Honest opinions please. X

Never heard of that name

emsyj37 · 15/04/2019 15:02

I know an adult Nyree - wonder if it's the same one you met as a child? [Grin]

MadisonAvenue · 15/04/2019 15:05

I remember there being an actress called Nyree years ago but I’ve never actually met one.

meow1989 · 15/04/2019 15:06

Ive only seen it spelt ngaire

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/04/2019 15:07

I've heard of the actress Nyree Dawn Porter but I've never met one. It's a nice name.

Calixtine · 15/04/2019 15:09

It’s traditionally spelt Ngaire and is a Maori name. There’s a famous academic called Ngaire Woods who I often hear interviewed and I googled her name one time!

Nyree Dawn Porter IIRC, Irene in The Forsyte Saga in the 1960s?
Pretty name.
The original spelling of the name is Ngaire.

badtime · 15/04/2019 15:12

It's of Maori origin, and as a PP says, properly spelled Ngaire. The actress Nyree Dawn Porter anglicised her name so English people would be able to say it.

LemonBreeland · 15/04/2019 15:13

I've only ever known one. She would be about 30 now. I really like it, not keen on Sophia as it always seems a bit small girl in pink frilly dress to me. I like Annabel, with that spelling.

3ChangingForNow · 15/04/2019 15:17

Yes I know one

loveshinealight · 15/04/2019 15:22

I know a ngaire and went to school with a Nyree.

Nixen · 15/04/2019 15:25

I know a Nyrie

MikeUniformMike · 15/04/2019 15:39

Sorry I meant Maori.

Nesssie · 15/04/2019 15:41

Is Ngaire and Nyree suppose to be pronounced the same?!

lurker101 · 15/04/2019 15:44

I knew a Nyree - she was from Northern Ireland but not sure of the origins of the name

PickleFish · 15/04/2019 15:55

I know(of) a Nyree (adult); she is Welsh I believe.

FogCutter · 15/04/2019 16:09

I know an adult Ngaire - pronounced Nyree.

It's a gorgeous name, would have used it but kept having DSs instead of DDs!

JumpingFrogs · 15/04/2019 17:03

There's Ngaio too, another Maori name, pronounced Nay-oh

Shadow1234 · 15/04/2019 22:40

Never heard of it, but really like it. prefer it to Sophia or Annabelle

MyNewBearTotoro · 15/04/2019 22:42

I’ve never heard of it - is it pronounced Nigh-ree?

DeadDoorpost · 15/04/2019 22:43

I know one. Turns out she's an abusive woman to her daughter, an enabler to her abusive eldest son and doesn't seem to care about her middle son.

SallyOMalley · 15/04/2019 22:45

Yep, I went to school with a Nyree. Left 30 years ago and haven't met another since. I really like the name.

TokyoSushi · 15/04/2019 22:47

I knew one as a teenager, she was from a very, very posh family!

GaraMedouar · 15/04/2019 22:49

The only one I know is Nyree Dawn Porter.
