Nyree. I met a girl on holiday when I was about 10, her name was Nyree and i liked it a lot but I've never met another. Online it says its English but also references Australia and New Zealand. My other name choices are Sophia and Annabelle so it's quite different to those. Honest opinions please. X

Never heard of it

CalleighDoodle · 15/04/2019 22:57

love it

FrozenMargarita17 · 15/04/2019 23:28

Yes she's an adult. Nice lady if a bit gossipy !

FrozenMargarita17 · 15/04/2019 23:29

Whoops and yes she's from New Zealand

allfurcoatnoknickers · 16/04/2019 00:02

I know a Nairi - pronounced Nyree. She's Iranian. I think it's a great name.

Rufftumbles · 16/04/2019 00:06

I know a few people called Neiri. We’re in Wales so I always just assumed it was Welsh. Pretty name.

Much more positive reaction than I expected, so surprised so many others know it, I've not seen it on a baby name list anywhere. My husband and son like it too, but my friend thinks it sounds made up which concerns me a little. I'm not keen on the spelling Ngaire, that'd definitely be a nightmare for her to explain the pronunciation all the time and looks a bit harsh to me. I always liked the name but I've only just considered it. @deaddoorpost that's horrible, what a way to put you off a name. X

Potentially could've met the same one as a few of you mentioned, if I remember rightly she was northern Irish and her sister was called Laila. X

There are two in the same year group in the school I work in- I’ve come across a few but I thought it odd that there were two the same age! I think one spells in Nygarie.

MercyBodle · 16/04/2019 04:42

I know an adult Ngaire - same pronunciation. I prefer Sophia and Annabel.

flumpybear · 16/04/2019 05:02

I went to school with a Nyree (she pronounced it n-eye-ree
She'd be late 40's now

Cantbelieveit101 · 16/04/2019 05:25

Yes I know one, and I'm in Australia

Pommes · 16/04/2019 05:48

I have never heard of it before, but love it.

girlsname · 17/04/2019 07:33

Do you mean Ngaire? It's pronounced in a similar way to what you have suggested. I live in Australia and know a couple of Ngaire's but can't say I've ever heard of the name you have spelt

tabbiemoo · 17/04/2019 08:08

We had a Ngaire (pronounces Nyree) at the school where I work a few years ago and now have a Nyree. I’m not a fan tbh. I prefer Annabelle (prefer that spelling to Annabel)

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 17/04/2019 08:13

I've only heard of Nyree Dawn Porter the actress my dad had a crush on. It's a gorgeous name, very uncommon but lovely for a child and grown woman.

cariadlet · 17/04/2019 08:22

I've only met one in RL. That was a little girl in my dd's baby group. She'd be 15 or 16 now.

Before that I'd only heard of Nyree Dawn Porter. I hadn't realised before this thread (and a quick check on Google) that she was born in New Zealand and changed the spelling of her name from the original Ngaire.

I think it sounds pretty.

DeadDoorpost · 17/04/2019 09:52

@Justus absolutely, but then I'm also picky about names anyway. If this baby is a boy I isn't know what to do. Already used up the only name I liked.

Justus22 · 17/04/2019 19:01

@deaddoorpost I have 3 boys, all names picked days after their birth, I thought a girl would be easy to name but now we're having one I just can't decide. I wanted a Sophia for years and now I'm having a daughter I'm just not sure I do 🤦‍♀️. Name giving is not as easy as I expected xx

I've heard of Nayiri (pronounced Nyree) which is Armenian

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 17/04/2019 19:07

Yes I'm Australian born late 70s and went to school with a girl called Nyree

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 17/04/2019 19:08

Born in the late 70s I meant

FraggleRocking · 17/04/2019 19:09

Yes - adult though
