How would you pronounce Evelyn?

  • EEV-lin
  • EV-uh-lin
  • EV-lin

I think I tend to say it the last way, but I suspect that's because I don't talk proper, innit? And it's the first two that most people would tend towards.

What would your inclination be?

I'd pronounce it ev-uh-lin

Sophronia · 07/04/2019 11:11

Ev uh lin

CherryBlossom23 · 07/04/2019 11:12

Somewhere between the second and third way. I'm Irish if that makes a difference

Aimily · 07/04/2019 11:13

Ev-uh-lin but that's only because it's how my cousin pronounces it (its her daughters name) until then it was alway Eev-lin

Eminybob · 07/04/2019 11:15

I only know one and it’s eev-lin. In fact she goes by Eve.

mynameiscalypso · 07/04/2019 11:15

Doesn't it depend if it's for a boy or girl?

littlebunnyhophophop · 07/04/2019 11:16

That's my mils name and we pronounce ev e lyn x

CherryBlossom23 · 07/04/2019 11:16

I always thought Eev-lin was how it was pronounced for a man but I could be wrong.

DIZZYTIGGER87 · 07/04/2019 11:19

Little girl I know -Ev-lin
SIL's MIL - Eve-lin

Before I knew these two, I used to say Ev-e-lin

Now I am permanently confused and wait to hear how someone else says it first

HotpotLawyer · 07/04/2019 11:26

It always used to be eev-lin for girls when I was a child, but now I am more used to the European-sounding ev-uh-lin or ev-lin, so I would check.

Evelyn Waugh: Eev-lin.

EggysMom · 07/04/2019 11:34

I'd pronounce it EVE-lyn until the person corrected me and told me they were an EV-lyn. I think both are quite valid.

PhilomenaButterfly · 07/04/2019 11:35

Evlinn

ChoccyBiccyTastic · 07/04/2019 11:36

Either of the first two. Used to be first for boys, second for girls, but irl, I've met women called either and no men with the name at all. Never heard the last option in use.

kaytee87 · 07/04/2019 11:36

Ev-eh-lin

Nanasueathome · 07/04/2019 11:45

My late MIL was Evelyn
Always insisted it was pronounced as Ev Lyn

IckyTummy · 07/04/2019 11:46

Ev-uh-lin.

TeaForTheWin · 07/04/2019 11:48

Ev-eh-lin.

redwoodmazza · 07/04/2019 11:54

Ev-uh-lin.

PCohle · 07/04/2019 12:00

Ev-Lin

(Eev-Lin for a boy)

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 07/04/2019 12:03

Eev-lin my old boss pronounced hers this way.

DramaAlpaca · 07/04/2019 12:17

EV-lin. I'm in Ireland & that's how it's usually pronounced here.

JimJamJarmusch · 07/04/2019 12:35

Mixed bag then! I think probably the Ev-lin/EV-uh-lin distinction is more down to accent/how you enunciate rather than distinct pronunciation. It's on our list and I was a bit worried I'd sound daft pronouncing it as two syllables rather than a clear three! (I'm probably less fond of EEV-lin, don't know why). Glad to hear other people would say it my way!

Ever-linn

blackteaplease · 07/04/2019 12:37

I'd say Ev lin. I'm from the west coast of Scotland, maybe there's a regional thing going on.

BondiandBabe · 07/04/2019 12:40

Eev Lin.
