How would you pronounce Evelyn?

  • EEV-lin
  • EV-uh-lin
  • EV-lin

I think I tend to say it the last way, but I suspect that's because I don't talk proper, innit? And it's the first two that most people would tend towards.

What would your inclination be?

Ev-eh-lin, as it Is written.

Definitely not Ever-lin! There's no R in the name.

JimJamJarmusch · 07/04/2019 14:37

I think that's just how people are representing a three-syllable pronunciation.

It’s funny because I think eev-lin sounds more feminine then the other two but it’s the masculine pronounciation

Cbeebiesrehab · 07/04/2019 14:46

It’s my daughter’s name. We say Ev-uh-lyn/Ev-lyn (kind of a cross between the two-it’s hard to write) if we were to use her full name. It’s what most people presume when they see it written down ime

Grandma's sister was always Evulin when grannie was cross. Evie to everyone else Smile. She was great - always happy and maintained her very naughty side into her late 80s.

spritesandunicorns · 07/04/2019 14:59

I have an ev-uh-lin. The spelling is the same either way and like you I didn’t like eev-lin but now I think if she prefers it when older she has the choice.

We use evvy as a nn. I also like eve as a nn but think that works better with the pronunciation eev-Lin.

Vitalogy · 07/04/2019 15:06

I just love the name.

Ev lin Pretty sure that is how it's supposed to be pronounced too. I like the name but it's often shortened. I know one and she's called evie.

IchibanLipstickForMen · 07/04/2019 15:23

@BondiandBabe love your username 😂 fancy a Margarita?

Lovetunnocks · 07/04/2019 15:25

Ev-Lin. (SE Scotland)

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 07/04/2019 18:36

A few years ago I was saying "ever-lin" but was corrected and told it's supposed to be "eev-lin". Since then I know of about 3 different baby girls that have been born that have it pronounced "eev-lin" so I guess I was wrong for a long time Grin

Cbeebiesrehab · 07/04/2019 18:54

You weren’t wrong Molly as both are legitimate pronunciation, it’s a matter of preference.

AppleBlossomTimeNow · 07/04/2019 18:57

Eev-lin for a boy
Ev-lin for a girl

BondiandBabe · 07/04/2019 19:54

Ichiban of course! You're welcome at the Margarita Palace anytime.

EleanorOalike · 07/04/2019 19:59

I know a few and read it as both Ev-lin and Eev-Lin.

The little ones I know are all Eevlin nn Evie.

The older (around 30) are Evlin nn Ev Hmm.

MyDcAreMarvel · 07/04/2019 19:59

Ev a Lyn.

dementedpixie · 07/04/2019 20:01

I say Ev e lin

starkid · 07/04/2019 20:34

EV-uh-lin

Eustasiavye · 08/04/2019 07:48

Apparently the female version is Eve-lyn
The male version is Ever-lyn
Back in the day when I was pregnant I was unsure of the correct pronounciation or whether the name was traditionally masculine or feminine. This stopped me from using it.

Eustasiavye · 08/04/2019 07:51

Actually appleblossom might be correct.
I wouldn't use it as it's very common now and you'll forever have people mispronounced it.

Tiramisu1 · 08/04/2019 07:58

Is Evelyn a boys name?

bibbitybobbityyhat · 08/04/2019 07:58

The correct pronunciation is Evlyn for a girl and Eeevlyn for a boy. I know of 2 baby girls born in the last couple of months - both Evelyns. I think it might be this year's Grace/Olivia/Sophia/Ellie.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 08/04/2019 08:00

Evelyn Waugh was very much a boy.
