Any thoughts?

I'm not sure if it's a bit like calling your child town centre or plaza something.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Love it

Tavannach · 12/03/2019 03:07

I really like it, partly because Marina Hyde is so awesome.

brizzlemint · 12/03/2019 03:54

Your daughter might not always be in a landlocked county. We know a girl called Seren which was fine until they moved to live here and they got jokes about her being Severn, shame as it's a lovely name.

Jessabean · 12/03/2019 07:28

I think it's a lovely name. Although pronunciation to the mirena coil is similar it is different and wouldn't put me off. I think of Marina and the diamonds and does make me think a little of nautical theme but don't see why that's such an issue 🤷‍♀️

Basically the coil and boat associations are the kind of things that I don't think are so obvious or awful that your asking for your child to be teased in the future. Think there is always going to be a level of if a kid wants to be cruel they'll find a way - e.g. knew someone at school who got teased as her very normal boring middle name was the same as a girl in school who was frequently teased. There's no name that's completely 'safe' imo.

If you like it use it. It's a lovely name & sounds like it works well for your family.

pollywolfff · 12/03/2019 07:30

personally love it :)

HighestMountains · 12/03/2019 07:40

Marina and the Diamonds!

I like it (& her music)

BroomstickOfLove · 12/03/2019 07:48

I like it: Stingray, Pericles, Marina Hyde, Marina Warner, Marina and the Diamonds. Lots of good associations.

123Flopsy · 12/03/2019 07:53

I like it! Yes, it's a little watery/boats but that's a nice association.

MarthasGinYard · 12/03/2019 07:59

It makes me think of those 80's cars with dodgy door handles....but that's my age.

Dp has aunt called Marina

She's Aunt Mina

daisypond · 12/03/2019 08:02

It's a really nice name, I love it - I know a bright and beautiful Marina in her 20s, which probably influences me. But as mentioned above, all the Marinas I can think of have positive associations.

ZaZathecat · 12/03/2019 08:08

It's lovely. I've known 3 Marinas: 2 Russian and 1 Italian. Younger people are more likely to think of Marina and the Diamonds, which is quite a cool association.

BoudicasBoudoir · 12/03/2019 08:27

Princess Marina, too. The Queen’s aunt.

Where I grew up (far-flung and rural) there were two or three Marinas, very likely all related, and they pronounced it Mar-EYE-na.

GMtoBe · 12/03/2019 08:39

Beautiful name. My aunt is French and it's her name. I think it's lovely.

Luckingfovely · 12/03/2019 08:44

Love it

nometal · 12/03/2019 08:54

nometal · 12/03/2019 09:55

Mine was purpleish too. Although, the official name was Midnight Blue. A sort of plum colour.

Reg number NHX 566L. Funny what you remember.

ApplestheHare · 12/03/2019 14:44

nometal that sounds like a great first car. I'd like a plum coloured car now!

brizzlemint that poor girl, Seren and Severn sound the same Confused

Jessabean I think you're right that someone will always find something to pick on with a name, especially kids. I keep reminding myself that nobody's really bothered about names once you're an adult and so it will probably work out find in the end whatever we call her!Grin

Pemba · 12/03/2019 15:15

I think it's lovely, and a bit unusual.

aliceandkids77 · 12/03/2019 15:55

don't really like sorry OP. but if you love it then go for it, she is your dd after all!

Ariela · 12/03/2019 16:25

I think it's a lovely name. Possibly outing here, but in another life, years ago I had a job in which from time to time I had to speak to Marina Ogilvy (was Mowatt at the time, don't think she had a very happily married life) and I thought she was absolutely lovely too, always thinking of other people first, she always remembered past conversations eg if I said I wouldn't be there next time she'd ask how my holiday went etc. So the name has only very nice connotations for me.

howdoyoukeepawaveuponthesand · 12/03/2019 16:30

Fabulous name.

I know a Marina in her 60s and she is absolutely wonderful so I may be biased.

I also love the pop singer Marina and the Diamonds. She’s beautiful.

OrdinaryGirl · 12/03/2019 17:59

Love it! (And I remember both Marina in Stingray and Marina the mysterious diver in the beautiful film Local Hero 👵🏻)

OrdinaryGirl · 12/03/2019 18:00

Oh and of course the magnetic Marina Abramovic as mentioned up thread ❤️
